E6430 Owners Thread

Is it the same mainboard as before or was it replaced?

Is the BIOS up to date (A18)? Is there any USB 3 option in the BIOS? Did you try the Intel chipset drivers provided for the E6430? I don't see anything else specifically relevant listed for the E6430.

i was rejoicing too early - after bios update i didn't see the error bubble for a few hours. now it started to appear again...

solved, thanks to you, @John Ratsey.

yes, the mobo was fixed, not replaced. i think an AC-power spike killed it, and the CPU.

bios was NOT up to date, i had A17. just put A18 on. and, to my surprise, the unknown device has now disappeared from device manager.

didn't yet try if USB3 devices actually function on full speed. if not, will report back.

 

Please clarify: USB problem fixed or not fixed?

If you have now got the latest BIOS and using the latest Dell chipset driver and still have the error then I wonder whether the repaired board isn't 100% healthy.

FIXED, i think. (though i'm still not sure about speed of it, 2 or 3). quite unexpectedly / counterintuitively the usb/unknown in the device manager was (likely) some component of the bluetooth adapter on the system that did not have correct drivers. after updating bluetooth drivers, it is gone at least for half-a-day now.

I've been a lurker for years and just now signed up for a forum account. Last week I was looking around on eBay and came across a Latitude e6430. I wasn't really in the market for a laptop, but for the price I couldn't turn it down. I picked up an e6430 with following specs for $159 shipped: i5 3440m, 8GB Samsung 1600Mhz ram, 320GB 7200 rpm HDD, 1366x768 screen, nVidia NVS 5200m, webcam, fingerprint reader, DVD-ROM drive, backlit keyboard, extended battery in "Normal" health. Looks like a corporate lease device that sat around on a shelf its entire life. There is next to zero wear anywhere on the laptop. No scratches or scuffs on the screen. Just a really nice looking laptop. The keyboard feels great, too.

I took it apart a few days ago to do a detail cleaning. I pulled off the cpu/gpu heat sink/fan unit and found that the thermal paste on the cpu and gpu was pretty dried out and the heat transfer pad on the chipset was missing. I already had a tube of Arctic Silver III lying around, so no problems there. I ordered a few heat transfer pads off of eBay and picked up a caddy for the optical drive bay so I could move the platter drive to that bay and will be installing a spare 2.5" 120GB SSD I had lying around in the hard drive bay for Win 10 Pro 64, browser, and MS Office. I've been using SSD's exclusively in my PC's for a few years now and have gotten badly spoiled. Using anything with a platter drive feels painfully slow now.

I see that this thread isn't especially active anymore as the e6430 is 5 years old now, but I'm hoping to chat with some current owners about their laptops and any upgrades they've done or problems they've fixed.

If anyone even frequents this page anymore, Dell thought it would be funny to release Spectre fixes to sandy-bridge machines, the generation behind this laptop, after they didn't appear on the list of machines that would get the update. Even more messed up is that they released the BIOS for the E6420 before the E6430

I have just bought on of those and i was wondering about the m2 ssd support. I have seen the WVAN slot and the WLAN slot for mpcie card but the third one is unlabelled on my motherboard. Does-it support sata ? It looks like it can take an half size m2 ssd.

 

No, it does not work. While the card fits, it doesn't have the controller chip to address this board afaik.

 

Well that's too bad, i guess i have to ditch the ODD, not that i care much about it but it would have been cool to get speed/storage and ODD.
