E6430 Owners Thread

Same here, except I'm running Windows 8.1. It's not so bad, but I hope Windows 10 is a big improvement.

Try a small battery for the modular bay, it adds 33% to the battery life (if you have a standard 60 wh battery). The 90 wh battery and the 30wh modular bay battery is a monster combination, I can run the laptop on high performance and play intensive games for two hours with that setup >

 

We shall see on July 29th! I already have my upgrade locked in. I think I am going to remove the heatsink and redo the tim with some noctua thermal compound. My only complaint is how hot this thing runs but it is an I7 in a small frame with High TDP.

 

Yes definitely. It stops being a laptop at that point.

I find that for normal use (<20 tabs on Firefox, no games or video editing) the power saver mode works quite well and keeps it fairly cool, but I only ever use the laptop screen instead of many monitors.

It is an ok screen. It could use some improvement, but it's been satisfactory enough for me to think it an upgrade is perhaps not worth the expense.

IS IT CONFIRMED that you CAN stability run an i7 quad in this chassis? according to spec sheet and wiki list of processors, max supported is Core i7-2640M, which is a duel core. at 35 watts. This is a 45 watt processor, and mind you the dedicated gpu already likes to run hot in games or other "intensive processes". I don't want to buy a proc, only to have a melted hunk of magnesium alloy or a cooked gpu.

 

This would be a tricky endeavor. even IF the board cutout was the same, only certain iX-2XX0M processors would work on it, and even then, its getting everything to fit just so and hoping the screw holes are where they need to be.

Dell is notorious for being able to interchange parts between models and series, but typically motherboards and chassis is not one of them; so if you do this, investigate well, because as yet I've never seen or heard this being done.

I'm new owner of dell e6430, it is my first dell, so far I have been ThinkPad person. I'm very happy with e6430 except one small problem. On ThinkPad i could use trackpoint middle button for both scrolling and middle click thanks to tpmiddle utility, is there anything similar for dells as well?

 

Looking at the Dell touchpad software for my E7450 (which is probably the same) I think the nearest you can get is to set both the main touchpad buttons as middle click. Unfortunately, this setting doesn't appear to also apply to the trackpoint buttons. Or maybe someone knows a registry hack.

I had a E6430 with a quad core (i7-3740qm, I think), but it came from the factory that way. It's not clear that the motherboard or the heap pipe are the same with the quad cores CPUs; I think there was some discussion about the difference in the heat pipe for the quads somewhere higher up on this thread.
