E6430 Owners Thread

hello everyone, i bought a very nice refurbished e6430s and i want to get a PW380 docking station. my question is if the power cords are interchangeable, ie if i can use the 90W adapter that came with the laptop or i need a different kind for the dock. thanks a lot

 

I think the docking stations are shipped with 135W PSUs but this power is only needed if running a very highly rated computer plus a load of peripherals.

So, to answer your question, the 90W PSU will work fine with the docking station. However, it's usually convenient to have one PSU permanently connected to the dock and another in your computer bag. A 65W PSU is enough for the 6430s and is a bit smaller and lighter than 90W so that would be a more suitable size for the bag. Any Latitude PSU from the past 10 years (maybe more) should be suitable. The newest model has rounded sides.

My fiance recently needed an inexpensive laptop so I did some poking around.

I've always had laptops issued to me by work, so for personal computers I've only ever had custom built desktops, so I was a little lost in my shopping at first.

I spent lots of time on Groupon Goods, and shopping for Chromebooks I could hack into running Linux.

I just couldn't bear the thought of buying anything with soldered on RAM or non-upgradeable storage. (2.5" Sata bays or bust!)

In the end I remembered how fond I always was of my Dell D and E series laptops issued at work throughout the years (they sure beat the piece of junk HP Folio thing I have now)

So, for $269 I ordered a factory refurbished E6430s with an i5-3320m, 4GB of RAM and a 128GB SSD on Amazon. I also picked up a Intel 7260 WLAN card for 802.11ac, and a optical bay second hard drive caddy.

The plan is to dual boot Windows 10 Pro (on the included SSD in the secondary caddy) and Linux Mint (on a Samsung 840 Pro in the main slot). Might also pick up more RAM, but I'll wait until it arrives. With 4GB I'm assuming it's configured as 2x2GB for dual channel performance, but if it isn't and there's a single 4GB stick in there, I don't want to over-buy RAM.

I'm looking forward to this project. These laptops are some of the best to work on, with their clever doors and easily accessible compartments for RAM, drives, WLAN cards, etc.

 

Are you or is anyone aware of an IPS replacement LCD panel for this? Great laptop with zero issues but the TN panel is killing me now that I've got a need for serious photo work.

 

Afaik, there is no IPS replacement available for the E6430. It may be cheaper to use an external IPS display.

The missing IPS panel on the E64x0 is why I've upgraded to an E5450 last year. ♥ IPS.

 

What about the x1 carbon gen 1. Its only a TN but its a great TN. Ive heard of people talking about it being possible. Or (idk if it is possible) the ATG 1366x766, its lower res but it has better brightness, mcuh better contrast and better srgb coverage.

I took apart the heatsink and noticed the thermal gap pad for the northbridge is missing. The Vram of nVidia GPU had the pads on.

This is the image I found on Google. The end of the heat pipe is where the northbridge goes.


May I know thickness should I get?

hey all - i just had a motherboard problem, which got fixed. but now usb 3 drivers are refusing to install.

if i use the drivers that are meant to be for the intel series 7 chipset that's here, the computer blue-screens. i do get the series 8 drivers to install, but there's an unknown device in the device manager, that refuses to go away - or accept any drivers known to man.

device iD on the devmanager is
USB\UNKNOWN
info under "general" says:
Port_#0004.Hub_#0003

and a super-annoying "USB Device Not Recognized" balloon keeps popping up.

usb 3 hub - from series 8 installs, but then says "Currently, this hardware device is not connected to the computer. (Code 45). To fix this problem, reconnect this hardware device to the computer."

this computer has been unused for 6 months before the motherboard problem. USB 3 never really worked, but i had the series 7 drivers on previously, though i don't remember how i installed them. anyway, i don't think i ever saw USB3 connection speeds on external devices.

my chip is 3740qm.
