I could use some help here...

    --> New laptop. Yesterday I did a clean install of Win7 64bit, hadn't
gotten around to installing Dell drivers and applications yet.

I said yesterday that my E6410 failed to wake after going to sleep. Well I
think it's worse than that. When I went to it and thought it was asleep I
noticed that I could see a very faint remainder of the explorer window that
was open at the time. I thought it was like a plasma screen where the image
can remain a while on the screen, and thought no more about it.

Well, it turns out it probably wasn't asleep and the screen was just very, very
dim. This morning when I turn the machine on it boots but the screen is so
dim/dark I can only barely see the outlines of the things on the screen, no way
I can see the mouse or read any text. It's the same during the Bios boot so
I can't see I how to do any kind of diagnostics.

I tried hooking up my desktop LCD monitor through a VGA cable to the
laptop's VGA connector but nothing happened. Is this all that is necessary
to use an external monitor ?

    Any suggestions would be appreciated.

I believe you just plug in the monitor and hit Fn + F8 to change displays

Once you can see what your doing I'd go to dells site and download all the latest 64bit drivers

I just figured out the "Fn+F8" code to go to an external monitor and the
display is fine going to my desktop monitor. [thanks Rob, hadn't seen your
    post yet]

I ran a diagnostic test in the Bios and got the following error :
    Error Code 0322

    Msg: Error Code 2000-0322
Msg: LCD Panel - unable to modify brightness

"The given error code and message can be used by Technical Support to
    help diagnose the problem."
Any ideas before I go to Dell ? Are they going to give me a hard time
    because I did a clean install ?

    --- UPDATE ---

Just got off the phone with Dell support. They're going to replace the LCD and
the parts around it. Apparently a problem with the inverter.

Out of curiosity, is this just purely coincidence or could reloading the OS have
anything to do with this ? (or the OS's power management for that matter).
Everything appeared to work fine until the newly installed Windows 7 ran for a
    few minutes.

On normal usage the CPU runs at about 58 C. I have the i5 520M and the nVidia 3100m.

That's not too bad. What about idle/full load? What are you using to measure the temps?

I don't think reinstalling the OS has anything to do with it. It's purely coincidental.. :)

I'm using Core Temp to measure the highest temp out of the two cores.

I guess its not too bad, but I'm just used to my old laptop (Inspiron 8600) that would measure at 60 C on load. Maybe if I apply some arctic silver it will lower the temps somewhat.

    From Notebookcheck.net's review:

This is very interesting. I went through configuring an E6410 and saw no option for a modular bay battery. Has anyone seen this?

I believe you need to order it separately, although I may be wrong. It plugs into the port replicator outlet on the bottom of the unit.
