Thanks. I don't have a broadband card, and all drivers are from Dell. I have also tried the Intel drivers from Intel, but the results are the same. Hibernation has always been disabled.

For unused WWAN, wouldn't it be better to disable WWAN in the BIOS? Whenever I prep a system, I always disable it in the BIOS.

recently bought an e6410 on ebay. this is after of 1hour of messing around with right when it arrived at my door.

    specs.
    i5 540m
    nvidia graphics
    blue tooth/camera/ finger scan.
samsung 128gb ssd (upgraded from original)
6gb ram (upgraded from original) 2gb and 4gb (this one does not have a sticker on it anymore, *weird*)
    BIOS A10

    ok my concerns are.

the computer boots up and runs fine. BUT

    1) the fan spikes every 2-3 mins (probably to medium rpm) for about 10 seconds. when im surfing the net.

    2) under panel right at the RAM slots is kinda warm in such a short time

    3) the fan is ALWAYS ON (medium rpm) while im on BIOS screen. and when i existed that BIOS (after about 5 mins of looking around in there) it shut down. and when i started again a message popped out saying that it was shut down because of the excessive heat.

3.1) so i went to the BIOS again (ofcourse the fan is on again) and went under "thermal log" and appearently there were 3 shut down log of excessive heat.

    4) ATA mode is currently set in BIOS. should set it to AHCI? i hear that's the mode for SSD.

the warranty has been transferred to me (COMPLETE CARE WARRANTY). i don't mind calling DELL about these issues, but i'm worried that they will give me crap about that RAM *1 of the stick doesn't even have the sticker on it* and SSD upgrade.

    please advise.
    thank you so much.

these issues were not in my other e6410 (i5 560m, intel hd, WD 7200 rpm hdd). the fan for this one rarely comes on.

You need to re-apply grease on the CPU or change the thermal pad for the GPU, there is definately a heat issue.

Have them send out a replacement heatsink (DP/N KTPRC), it's the only way they will send you thermal pads (GPU and chipset).

Yes, change it to AHCI (you will probably need to reinstall Windows). Third-party memory won't be an issue.

so i had a live chat with a rep. I casually mentioned the "fan kicking on quite often problem" with him and he said that these conditions are normal. but

he said you can setup with the depot repair to run some tests to determine any problems. which i declined.

i will monitor the laptops for another week or two to see if the problem still persists.

WHAT IS *DEPOT REPAIR* ANYWAY? is this like when they hook up to my laptop remotely to do tests?

It's the mail-in service. However, you do have the option of requesting a parts-only dispatch for the heatsink if you replace it yourself (make sure to clean the CPU thoroughly of old grease with rubbing alcohol).

yes there is definitely a heat issue, i have narrow down to the nvidia graphics. when ever there's any cpu usage (cpu stays a cool 45 C ish) but the graphics spikes like crazy well into 90-100 C @ about 15-20% cpu usage.

i see that the chipset's temperature is around same temperature as the grphics also.

they are sending out a tech with a fan/heatsink to try to replace this problem

don't know if this is too much to ask, but do you have a dell installation disc win7 64bit? are you willing to send it out to me? mine came with 32bit as original and dell will not send out a 64bit version.

yea i know how to do it with out the dell disc. i'll make a bootable windows disc to reinstall my OS with AHCI mode after the dell tech fixes the thermal problem

thanks for your help. im curious, how hot are your temperature on a norm? you seem to have the exact same config. like mine.
