Thanks ! 179.13 worked perfectly. i now have both gamma, colorvibrant and contrast adjustability. (It may be some graphical errors sometimes with the driver, but no big problems so far.) This surely makes the display better and more pleasant. My remaing issue, the bad vertical viewing angle I guess I just have to live with, as I surely like the e6400 otherwise.

My WUXGA LCD on E6500 is also defective. Overall the light is not even. The bottom is brighter than other area, and the two bottom corners are dark. I planned to stand with it until I found a dark spot. Then I asked for replacement. However, I replaced twice and both of them are even worse - There is a big (about 5x10mm) dark area in middle of screen. It is not so apparent when looking from front, but when looking from sides it's obvious.

    All three LCDs are SEC5443.

That's unfortunate. If possible, you can try to get the rep to send you an SEC5442 or AUO4227, both of were are actually flawless for me. Maybe some of the LG owners can help you find LG part numbers as well.

We did a side by side comparison of both LG and SEC panels which came with different units of e6400 we had in the office (physical specs are identical both using Nvidia NVS160m graphics and LED backlit 1440x900 res)

LG Panel: white is more yellowish hue
Samsung Panel: white is more blueish hue

Here is a pic. Look at the blue sky differences at the top of the screen and white side borders. Samsung panel on the right, LG panel on the left.

LG Panel: when tilted at wider angles, you start to see fine horizontal lines noticable on the white areas on the screen.
Samsung Panel: Horizontal lines not as pronounced as the LG Panel.

I tried to take a picture of this, but it doesn't show from the crappy camera phone I was using. Samsung panel on the right, LG on the left.

Quality wise, they are rather similar, but I prefer the Samsung's blueish hue over the LG's yellowish hue for white. Neither are .... really white. SEC panel also doesn't have those horizontal lines at very wide angle views.

Actually you CAN set them to be really white. Just play around with the videocard setting a bit and definitely reduce the brightness of blue for SEC and yellow for LG.

Does anyone know how to find the screen manufacturer in Linux? I'm running Ubuntu.

Sorry for digging up an old thread, but how would you say the E6400's display compares against the MacBook Pro, ThinkPad T400 and the regular MacBook. I know the MacBook (not Pro) has an awful display - that's why I'm asking! :p

    Photos would be super!

No quite so easy since, IIRC, Dell is now using LED backlit WXGA+ from three sources: LG-Philips, Samsung and, more recently, CMO. The T400's most likely uses one or more of the same.

Also, you need to compare current production. Displays are progressively getting better.

I'm mainly concerned about vertical vertical viewing angles and backlight evenness. By the looks of this thread (and the images in your review) it seems like the vertical viewing angles aren't that great on the E6400. I know that the following displays are being used:

    LG-Philips LPL0140
    Samsung SEC5442

What is the model number of the CMO display?

I know Apple uses LG, AUO and CMO in the white MacBook. The problem with those were that you had no vertical viewing angle. Even if you looked at it from a perpendicular position (which was hard to do due to the way the display hinge was designed) you could not get an acceptable image. It also had some strange "metallic" tint to it, probably due to the viewing angles or coating. Therefore I'm using the MacBook as the "low end of the quality bar". Conversely, MBP is the "high end" of the bar at the moment. I would like to know where E6400 places, since it's nearly $1000 cheaper than the MBP where I live.

Displays may get better, but vendors may cheap out on displays over time. The displays on the early Core Duo MacBooks from 2006 seem to be better than the ones made in 2008 (not including the new revision).
