    Hello all

Finally dumped my old refurb M4400 for a refurb 5510.

Win10 came installed, but would prefer Win7 from my previous system.

I took the Samsung Evo 512 SSD from the old M4400 and would now like to boot from this as an external drive via the thunderbolt/type-c port.

I hooked up the external SSD to the desired port. Win10 could access the disk, but the disk could not be seen at boot time.

The disk has both Win7 and Linux Mint 17 installed, using MBR for boot.

Contacted Dell, but their system for verifying warranty is down at this time.

I tried some of the BIOS settings, such as setting to AHCI, Legacy, USB and thunderbolt supported, but to no avail.

I'm assuming this is possible, but perhaps I'm missing an obvious step ?

Failing this avenue I would like to replace Win10 currently residing on the internal LITEON 512 M2. I was considering using Macrium Reflect to do a clone from the External to Internal. Does anyone have pointers on this method ?

Failing that, I guess I will have to install Win7 from scratch. Again any pointers for that process with this system in mind ?

p.s. This system has a 9cell battery, so the internal interface to support a 2.5 drive did not come with the system.

Hmmm can't connect usb harddisk to TB15 after BIOS upgrade either

I can't help but notice, that my driver is different from Dells

Are we sure, we don't need to force certain drivers?

I have now connected my Samsung 840 EVO SSD via one of the Type A USB ports and can now boot from it. The same drive via the Type C port was not capable of booting. Not sure if the issue resides with the Type C > SATA / USB hub or with the Type C port / BIOS.

I am able to boot Linux Mint from this external SSD but when attempting Windows 7 I get BSODs.

Anyone had BSODs with these disks ?

You've enabled booting visa thunderbolt in BIOS? It's disabled by default for some reason.

    Hi ygohome

Yes that option was enabled in the BIOS. I've yet to determine if this is a fault of the BIOS support for booting from that port, hardware port issue, or the hub thatI was using to connect the SSD to the port.
