Okay, folks, so here I am back after a little bit over a year and guess what? One of my laptops is dead.

I was sitting there working on a database when the screen and the fan just went dead. No screen, no lights. I checked the AC adaptor and reset it. Now I hear a hissing noise from the AC. I touch the power button. Nothing.

So I open up the machine and remove the battery and determine if it's a static issue. Nope. I replug the battery and the power light on the front has turned on and the power button is lit, too. So it is apparently not a battery issue. (As you can see above, I have a 2nd identical machine and I also swapped in that machine's battery and same result.)

When I push on the power button, the computer does not turn on, however. No fan, no boot, no lights except the battery apparently lighting up the front display and the power button.

I take a break and come back a little bit later and I can smell smoke. I don't see it and there's no flame but I can smell something smoky. I open up the computer and there's a strong smoky odor where a cable connects the power connector port to the motherboard.

So I don't know if it's the power cord connector, the motherboard or the cable that connects them. Seems unlikely to be RAM, could not be battery, and not likely the hard drive.

Onsite support is bringing a new motherboard and a new power cord connector tomorrow. I guess we will see what he/she says.

    Hello!
I bought E5570 with 1Tb HDD, but anyway I want Windows installed on SSD. I need at least 500 Gb and good perfomance (not in syntethic tests, but for normal home use - web surfing, movies). How to do it best?
    1. Remove HDD, install 2.5 SSD (500+ Gb)
    2. Install small 2242, keep HDD
    3. Remove HDD, install m.2 2248+2242 or big 2248 (and be able to install bigger battery in future?)
    4. Is there a way to install m.2 + HDD at the same time?
    5. Any other better solutions?
    Thanks in advance!
    and sorry for my English

    2. What speed offer HDD slot? Who faster - M.2 2280 or 2.5 SSD?

I would point out that the M.2 2280 slot and the 2.5" HDD slot overlap so you cannot use both of these at the same time (see the Owner's Manual for more details of component location).

I would also note that the option of using an M.2 2242 SSD in the WWAN slot is not ideal. Some people have had success with an SSD in the WWAN slot but others have reported that the SSD is not detected. Perhaps Dell removed this capability in a BIOS update? So I would no longer recommend this option.

This leaves you with two choices: An SSD in the M.2 2280 slot or a 2.5" SSD instead of the HDD. Your preference may be guided by price as well as whether the higher capacity battery is attractive. If you use the M.2 2280 slot then you can use either an SATA SSD or a PCIe (NVMe) SSD. The latter are faster, at least in benchmarks and also run hotter so it needs a heatsink (see the manual). However, I haven't noticed the difference between the two types in everyday usage and the NVMe SSDs currently have a significant price premium. M.2 and 2.5" SATA SSDs have the same performance with read speeds limited by the SATA 3 interface.

SSDs retain their performance better if there is empty space to help with garbage management, so bigger is better. You should therefore be looking for more than 500GB. If 1TB seems excessive then look around for the 750GB version of the Crucial MX300. It's the only SSD I know of with the in-between size and costs less than a 1TB SSD.

    Thank you very much, John!
This is all I wanted to know to choise a format. I think m.2 2280 is the better way for me.
I will search for SATA 3 (it is the same as SATA 6Gbit/s?) so, if I understand correctly, I do not need a heatsink, but I will need only screw or something else? (I readed about bracket like this)

The screw is M2 x 3 like this. I don't know if you need anything else. Have a look in the notebook and see if the place to fit the M2 x 3 screw is present. I have this photo of the E5570 SSD and it does appear to be connected to something like the bracket you found. Dell also gave the SATA SSD a simple thermal pad although it may not be necessary.

Yesterday I recieved my laptop and saw that there is no place where the screw will be. Screw should twist in the bracket. On your photo bracket is already installed.

My E5570 came with the M.2 2280 SSD pre-installed. I hope that your source for the bracket doesn't charge too much money. These small upgrades sometimes become expensive when the parts are not in good supply.
