Dell Latitude 7490

Thanks for all the discussion here; I've been watching inventory and sales, and while I'd been hoping a better coupon would come up my wife really needed the new machine and there was a pretty exact config she wanted which did pretty well with the $150-off-999+.

Pretty middle of the road configuration: i5-8250U, 16gb, 1920x1080 non-touch, 256gb SSD (no particular qualifiers -- I assume this means SATA M.2 as there's no room for a 2.5" in there?), 4-cell battery, Intel Wifi and dual pointing. Not too bad for $870 (before tax and completecare) -- I'm sure we could have done a little better waiting for a %-off coupon and upgrading the RAM myself but my wife is really unhappy borrowing my M3800, as it's too big and doesn't have the pointing stick.

Some more details in the order confirmation include that it's got the "Solid State Drive,256,80S3,HYNIX,SC311" -- looks pretty meh. Nothing else jumps out at me from the parts list.

Having been reading reviews on the new i7-8xx0H systems, I've decided to wait a while to see if any business-focused systems (with a normal, non-low-profile keyboard) come out with those; my XPS 9560 is holding up well so far.

 

Thanks for sharing the info about bezel size difference between touch and non-touch displays.

The more I think about it, the more tempting the 7390 is becoming to me. I prefer a larger display though.

If something like a Latitude 7590 without a numpad existed, it would probably be the best laptop on the market right now.

 

Any first impressions on the SLP display?

PWM? Brightness? Colors? Any idea on the power draw?

I wonder how one could identify an SLP display on the outlet.

 

Been a few days with this machine. Tried using the Dell image opposed to doing a clean install. Had to update a few drivers and the BIOS. Found the fan coming on A LOT - WMI service a bit out of control. Traced it to a Dell Support service, uninstalled and it has been nice and quiet since. It is certainly faster than my 7480. I don't see that much difference in brightness on the SLP screen compared to the 1920x1080 non-touch on my 7480.....but I do run it at 20% brightness. Calibrated the screen with a Spyder4Pro and it says 100% of the normal color gamut. Bezel at the top is smaller with a newer (and much faster) IR camera. Fingerprint reader is the same size and speed. I see anywhere between 4 and 13 hours of battery life according to Windows 10.

My keyboard SUCKS. The left side feels okay, but the right side feels like the keys are sticky. You can actually feel and HEAR a difference. Had an issue where the IR camera stopped working. Reinstalled the driver and it has been good for a few sleep/resume and reboot cycles. I think there is a BIOS issue since with a TB3 dock, it always says the power adapter is 60W and not the 65W that the system needs no matter what size the power supply. Does not do it with a USB3 dock. Never had that issue with my 7480. I opened a case with Dell and they are actually replacing the laptop since I have only had the machine a few days.

For those on the fence, you can save a lot of money with a 7480....especially from the Outlet. I wanted specific options that I can never seem to find in the Outlet.....

Do you find any noticeable difference in the SLP display?

Can you do an unscientific test whether this display has PWM flicker? (At lower brightness levels, 0/10/20 etc, if you open a white page - say google homescreen fullscreen, and point your cellphone camera towards the screen, do you see any lines scanning across the screen on your cellphone?) Also, is the 7480 a different size than the 7490?

Not that I see, but not 100% sure what I am looking for. I had the screen at 20% on Google.com Edge.....didn't see anything flickering/scanning/etc on my phone.

Pretty sure they are the same physical size.

Didn't realize the 7490 had a Precision trackpad. That was a nice find today.....

 

Can you give an estimate on how much battery the SLP panel adds in different workloads?

 

Go between thinking a decent amount to not much. Right now I'm at 73% remaining and showing 9:18 left. Earlier I was at 75% and 5:53 left. So.....all depends on workloads. I usually have Outlook, Chrome, Firefox, Slack and RemoteDesktopManager open and I'm on wireless. I guess depends on how 'hard' I am working. Nothing scientific at this point. I have not had the machine long enough to go a full day on battery or even try......

[EDIT] 30 minutes later and it shows 66% and 2:26 left. So.....who the heck knows.
