Here's hoping that they have sorted out the heat management accordingly.

I love the existing 74x0 series's heat management and fan kicking in only under heavy load. Hope they can maintain that.

Got my 7390 the other day. Great machine, snappy, put a 960 pro SSD in it... the thing is blazing fast and great battery life. I opted for the matte finish non touch screen, as I never used a touch screen I had in a business laptop yet, and don't plan to. Build quality is excellent.

This exact laptop? No, Dell has always used different model numbers for AMD models -- if they did offer a premium thin and light 14" model, it would probably be the 7495, and how similar the case would be to this one is anyone's guess.

It looks like Dell is at least considering introducing some new AMD-based Latitudes (off the top of my head, I can't remember the last time they did) including a regular-size 14" model:

...but I don't see any signs regarding release date, or any pictures yet, so whether that one is the same case as the 5490 (which hasn't gotten much love here in discussions) is an unknown.

@mr_handy: thanks a lot for the reply. I do wonder why to use another case if you change only the cpu. Plus the apu offering of amd is better than the one of intel. let the user choose dell.
@cbunting: Can you give more battery stats under different workloads(ie: Wifi+word/pdf, wifi+video playback, video playback)? And with how much brightness they were achieved?

re: different cases and designs, you can't change just the processor -- the entire motherboard is different.

The last I checked Dell works with several contract manufacturers, and might or might not be able to reuse the same case with a different motherboard depending on the timing of the designs. It's obviously in their interest to keep as many parts in common as possible, because it keeps costs down, but there's a really big lead time to these things and if Dell only recently decided to respond to market demands for the AMD parts that may simply not be possible.

In the past, Dell has mainly used AMD for their lowest-end mobile systems, and the 5000-series "mainstream" model hasn't hit market yet, so whether it will even show up in the premium 7000-series model is totally unknown.

When review models for the 5495 hit places like Notebookcheck and then when retail ones hit threads here, it will be much clearer how much it has in common with the Intel 5490. Right now, anything is speculation based on a leaked prerelease benchmarks.

Has anyone had any hands on time with these? How do they handle the quad core processors? Does the fan kick in more often than the previous models?

I have the version with the i5-8250U CPU. The fan only kicks in under heavy load. I'd say it's very similar to the latitude 7480.

The cinebench score on battery was around 430 and while plugged in, it was around 635. So those are pretty good but not the best when compared to similar laptops.

That's good to hear. Do you have the meltdown/spectre fixes applied?
