Dell Latitude 7490

Looks like they announced the 7290, 7390 and 7490. Unfortunately looks like the 7490 did not lose any of the bezel.

Personally, I was hoping for a 7390 like form factor.

I really hope the heat management in the quad core 7490 is handled well. I love that the current 74x0 models fans dont fire up for no CPU-intensive tasks, hope that holds up.

Looked at the 7490 product page on Dell, wow, only quad cores!

I really hope the heat management and consequently, fan noise, throttling etc are not issues that get introduced due to this.

 

The low power display is an interesting development and very useful step forward if it delivers what's promised as the backlight is the main power drain under light usage conditions.

There's mention in the specs (see the notebookcheck link above) to (i) M.2 2230 and M.2 2280 SSDs (ii) expansion slot for SSDs. So maybe these will offically take two M.2 SSDs. Unfortunately, M.2 2230 SSDs are harder to find than the M.2 2242 SSDs.

I'm a bit worried about the low power display as it might be an indication of PWM being introduced.

A matte touchscreen sounds great. Not sure if I'll get one, but it's good to have a matte option.

 

The low power panel is promising to give the same maximum brightness as current panels but using less power so, unless it uses a different technology, it will have fewer, or lower rated, backlighting LEDs. Whether PWM gets involved remains to be seen but there will be less need to try to work with a dim display in order to save power.

I was looking at one to replace my 7480, but the options are a tad limited on Premiere right now. No low power displays are available just yet. I will wait for those (and some reviews!) before I plunk down $2k. Also saw (as of now) the IR camera is only available with the touch screen - 14.1" FHD (1920 x 1080), Anti-Glare, IR CAM/Mic, WLAN w/ASA, Narrow Border Carbon Fiber back, On-cell Touch +170.10. Also need a vPro CPU to get TB3.

 

the Dell 7490 is overall is superior to the new Thinkpad T480s.

the only advantage / edge the T480s has is you can order it with discrete nvidia graphics.

 

I'm really interested in the 7490, but will be waiting for the 8th-gen -H CPUs to come out and see what picks up the 6-core new models before deciding. The benchmarks on the lower-wattage quad-core i7s are pretty impressive, and getting roughly the power of my 5470/i7-6820HQ in a much smaller and more portable package is really, really attractive.
