Dell Latitude 7490

Did anybody see/have the aluminium version of the 7490 ?
It's supposed to be available with the aluminium finish, but I only saw commercial pictures, not real ones. It's also unclear what parts are made of aluminium.

(btw, on the belgian Dell website, they say it's available but nowhere you can choose it - but Dell's website is as worse as their laptops are great IMHO )

 

I wasn't aware of a 7490 in that finish. Are you perhaps referring to 7400 2-in-1?

 

The 7490 was announced with an aluminium chassis (more than a finish, btw) on nearly all the laptop related websites, including notebookcheck -> https://www.notebookcheck.net/Dell-...ng-new-aluminum-chassis-options.357536.0.html

But apart from that announcement, nothing more (review / preview / real world pictures).

On the dell.com (us) website, you can read "Now available in a premium aluminum finish that will impress in any setting. The new finish is machine crafted from a single block of aluminum for added style and durability, so you can work on the go without worry".

A sort of "7400 7490". I'm quite impatient to read reviews about the 7400 as I was looking for a "professional" 2-in-1. Not sure I could live with soldered ram & clickpad.

That's why an aluminium made 7490 could be a nice offer.

Yeah, I'm with you on the 7400 downsides. For me, a lighter, slightly smaller bezel (but not too small of a body overall), and updated processor with the existing everything else is about as perfect as it gets.

I just installed Intel 660p NVMe 2TB in Dell 7490 and 4k read/write is way below what I have seen in all reviews:

According to reviews, I should get easly 50-60MB/s / 130-140MB/s - http://www.thessdreview.com/featured/intel-ssd-660p-m-2-nvme-ssd-review-1tb/3/

Laptop is set in BIOS at Raid On (instead of AHCI), the system is fresh, the drive is empty. I do tests on battery but I set Power Management to the highest setting, so I doubt that it is the reason.

Is it possible that laptops have got so much lower speeds? Because I believe that all online tests were undertaken on PCs rather than laptops.

I found some NVMe driver at Intel's webpage but this driver doesn`t see the disk at all even though 660p 2TB is on the support list.

I received a Latitude 7490 for office work some days ago.
Being a sysadmin used to fix incompatibilities I am a bit disappointed: It runs flawlessly, Ubuntu works out of the box without any issue at all, it is silent as a dark night in Antarctica, and fast as hell.
I am hoping that if I manage to hook an eGPU over thunderbolt I run into some issues, at the very least.

Being old school, I miss the option to remove its battery for preservation, but it does have a bios setting to stop charging it.
Other than that, I could successfully keep secure boot and sign my own kernel modules; I was worried about that out of my own ignorance. (hey, I come from a Dell 630).
Yesterday I received some firmware/bios update over the Ubuntu channel for fixing some thunderbolt issue which also worked flawlessly and flashed bios as expected.
I am unable to overcome my surprise.
If I can be of help testing it, just shoot me a note.

Is this the aluminium version ? Or the black plastic one ?

 

Hello, It is an odd material. I am not allowed to scratch it, but I would say it looks like a plastic surface, that could very well be aluminim covered in some resine or polimer. Feels like magic and a little plastic.

It seems I spoke too early; I have managed to get an issue:
I usually work on a two display setup. Since the laptop screen has an exorbitant resolution of 1920x1080 or so, text is quite small, and I like to connect an external 24 inches (61 cm in the real world) monitor over the HDMI, and extend the desktop.
Well, both Linux and W10 show the external monitor as stretched some 2 cm outside of the screen.
My external monitor is somewhat old, from 2014 or so, but it cooperates flawlessly with a Raden R7 260x I have on my playing rig.
Any suggestion?

I managed to fix it, changing settings at the monitor. At my monitor, Menu/Image/Image Size/ changed from 16:9 to a miracle "Screen Fit" (Ajuste pantalla in spanish) while keeping 16:9 at the video card configuration.
Image quality is horrible, but at least I can correctly use the monitor.
I wonder if this has anything to do with HDMI and if it would be better to use Display Port.

 

What is the screen option for slim bezels in 7490?
