I'm with you Sequoia...I don't fully understand what KF is either. I'm going from a Inspiron 8600 to the new Covet and so far the only keyboard issue, and it's not an M6400 issue, is me having to learn that things are shifted to the left now. But that would be true with any 17" model with a numeric keypad. I'm sure I'll get myself re-trained to the new positioning pretty quickly though.

I think it was the 9100, but I can't be sure - I've had a fair few Dell laptops.

Flex is when the keyboard moves downwards as you type. My M6300 is rock solid whereas the 9100 would shift if pressure was put on it. As mentioned, the custom fix was to open up the machine and insert folded aluminium foil about 3mm thick under certain parts of the keyboard to counteract the travel.

Flex often means that some parts of the keyboard (and therefore some keys) have more 'travel' than others

Thanks jimbob...that helped a lot. Based on that description I would say my 8600 has a "trampoline-like" quality. :) But it never bothered me on the 8600 so I guess I'm used to it.

I've got an Inspiron 9400 and never really experienced any flex at all so I've never really given it any thought before ordering the m6400. Went to the store the other day to check out some other laptops regarding flex, and while some sure had it I think it would have to be pretty **** bad to actually bother me much at all. Just hoping my m6400 won't be "**** bad". :p

Oh, and my order just went from "pre production" to "prepared for delivery". No update to the actual delivery date tho but I'm optimistic. :)

I don't have the part number. I can't find any reference to it on the Dell website except for the service manuals. I have not heard back from the support folks, so I'm not sure they know what it is, either.

As for the keyboard flex, the M6400 does have some, but it's not detrimental to my typing style. I cannot feel it at all when I'm typing. I would never have noticed it had I not tried to make it flex. I also have a Inspiron 9100, and I've never noticed the flex on it, either.

The left side of the M6400 keyboard is solid - no flex at all. The only flex I can find seems to be centered around the "K" key. Again, I do not notice any flex at all during normal typing.

you know, the funny thing about keyboard flex... the studio 17 used to have a flex around the [7] key... but after a keyboard swap... it's sturdy as heck..
