From what I'm seeing the only drivers missing are the video and broadcom USH.
All the others are picked up via windows update.

In talking to the local Dell repair person today, he provided an interesting comment. He said that the M6400 is "not built by Dell". According to him, the design specifications for the M6400 were done by Dell, but the actual manufacture was farmed out to another company.

This has nothing to do with the quality of the notebook, but I was wondering if anyone else has heard of this. Does Dell have their own factories around the world, or do they just have other manufacturer's plants in China and elsewhere build to their designs?

Dell build the M6400 in their own factories..at least in Europe they do...that I can guarantee.
And jarl..your last link is from a laptop manufacturer..of course they're gonna distort the facts.
Sure Dell use ODM but not for the M6400.

Unfortunately apart from not listing the driver the M6400 Windows 7, the M6400 Vista x64 driver download turned out to be the "Microsoft Vista Wireless Feature Pack for Vista SP1". Not very useful. Hence my post helping others find the way easily.

Mostly all the drivers for win7 are simply available as part of the win7 installation or update service. However this is not the case for blutooth for some reason.

Also note that not all Vista drivers work for Windows 7. The Vista video driver certainly failed in strange and interesting ways - the only viable W7 x64 video driver is the official Dell W7 one.

Snap! Apart from being able to dnld and use win 7 RTM right now, it's also a very low cost way of doing it - especially if you find one of the 25% off or other discount vouchers floating around.

Yeah I have the joy of 8GB of memory fully accessible :) and being an M6400 the possibility of up to 16Gb for later :))

    Paul.

I have found a few wrinkles with Win7 on the M6400 - see:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=5263240#post5263240

These are all just simple annoyances, not show stoppers. Overall I have been very happy with Win7 x64 and essentially use it all day every day!

I would be interested to know if Barn or other win7 users on the m6400 also see these issues or any others.

    Paul.

Hey all, I wonder if anyone can advise. My Precision m2300 gets very hot on the left side, especially at the back. Is there a fan back there that may have stopped working.

My processor is a T9500 which I thought was one of the cooler running ones at the time of purchase about a year ago.

    Thanks for any info.
