    Advice please:

Three weeks ago, I had my M6400 stolen here in London, UK, and the police have informed me that they weren't able to recover it in the raid on the thieve's homes.

I've registered it on Immobilise :: The National Property Register, for phones, gadgets, bikes & more... and have been checking on eBay but is there anything else I can do to see if they've tried to sell it on?

    Thanks!
    Ben

Did you activate computrace in your bios? Is it supported in UK?

Yeah, the old GPUs on eBay are way overpriced, plus the added concern of the state they're in and that they're not failed once which were than "cooked" in the oven to make them work a bit more.

I see there's one on eBay Germany for which it is claimed to work BOTH on the M6400 and M6500 (though it's rather expensive at almost EUR 300) - somebody could try it and if it doesn't work on the M6400 (which is expected), it might be used as grounds to get the money back :) Though, if it does work, then you end up paying $400 for it ;)

Thanks for the reply, but no, I didn't use computrace.. Obviously, I've learnt a few lessons from this experience... :(

Its not the chipset, its the interface that limits compatability. The M6400 uses a NON MMX style connector. It uses an OEM connector simular to older Dell laptops such as the M90, XPSM1710, Precision M6300, Inspiron M9300 etc.... Also Dell bios would limit use of other cards.

Yes, but we're talking about the M7820 from the M6500 which uses the same cards (e.g. FX3700M). It's just a question of whether the latest M6400 BIOS would support such a card or not.

Agreed. Seeing the supposed numbers on the 7970M (e.g. roughly 50% more 3d Mark 11 performance than the M8900), I'm skipping the M6600 upgrade as my M6400 is still going strong (my only gripe is the battery life as my current location has occasional several hour power cuts - thus, I hope the FirePro M4000 will turn out to be based on the 7970M and that Dell will support the AMD Enduro graphics switching on the M6700; then the only gripe would be the lost support for the IPS screen as the Intel is being lazy about the 10-bit color support).
