ils, thanks for the advice. I was able to find an older creative driver on the dell website. The webcam works now. Unfortunately, if I try to either update or revert the driver, I get BSOD.

If you want the driver, let me know. I can make an iso of the CD which came with the computer and upload it for you so you can make a backup for yourself.

    Thanks, ils.

I am getting a low high-pitched noise coming from my laptop. I assume maybe one of the fans might need to be cleaned or something. Since I am going to open the laptop up, I am thinking about applying some new thermal compound. Which thermal compound would you guys suggest? Thanks.

It might be the infamous "cpu whine", which is actually some of the capacitors vibrating as the CPU changes power states.

    John:

Thanks for the info. I assume that is just an annoyance, not something I have to worry about the CPU failing?

What is the normal temperature range for QX9300 under an average load? I assume something in the low 50's is quite reasonable? Will some new thermal compound lower that temperature? Thanks.

I have another quick question. I am considering upgrading the RAM. Should I get the DDR3 8500 or the DDR3 10600? My CPU is QX9300. Would I notice any difference with either?

It is rare for the Intel CPUs to die in normal service.

Based on my E6410, I would consider the low 50'c (C) to be reasonable. The overall control is the table in the BIOS which controls the fan speed according to the temperature. I would only worry about changing the thermal compound if you are getting full load temperatures above about 80C (which might suggest that the cooling system isn't getting the heat away fast enough.

Either RAM will work. However, the memory controller in the quad core CPUs will let the PC10600 RAM run at 1333MHz (unlike the dual core CPUs which only support up to 1066MHz). You would need to use a benchmark program (eg SiSoftware Sandra) to see any difference in performance because the higher MHz is offset by higher latency (in terms of clock cycles). Nonetheless, I would buy the faster RAM.

I know there's probably a 'software' or 'OS' thread but this one is where I'm familiar and it's a question about the Covet that is probably easy for anyone but me. I have Windows 7RC installed on one of the three partitions on my second drive and XP as my main OS on drive one. I want to replace the RC 7 with the Vista Business that came with the machine and my usual 'google for instructions' makes it sound like launching the shuttle or something to get rid of 7. I want to be careful because I have lots of important stuff on the other two partitions and don't want to lose it. [it's backed up of course but still....]. Can I just install the Vista over the Win 7? That sounds to me like it might work but there's that pesky menu before the boot that all my google info says I have to be careful with. Thanks in advance for any clues.

Bumping the old thread because I need an advice on the copper pad thickness that should be used for the chipset.

I removed the thermal paste on both the CPU and GPU and I used pieces some old AMD copper shims instead of the thermal pad on the chipset, but now the chipset temperatures are beyond the GPU and CPU temps (up to 65 C I think).

HI.I am new here so hello 2 everyone.

    I have a problem with my M6400.
    Ofcourse its black screen.
Before I write whats happend i let u know about some hardware.
    QX9300 2.53GHZ
    8GB DDR3 1066MHZ (2xkingstone and 2xsamsung)
    2x256GB SSD SAMSUNG
    FX3700 1GB
    Windows 7 Ultimate.
All MS FIX + new BIOS +new Nvidia drivers.
    OK so lets describe problem.
IF my laptop is connected to external power then I see black screen at each game.I am using this system to games and work.
It is working perfect at battery.(No connected to power supply)
Its happend in all games at the moment.
I tried change memory (bought 1 2GB 1066MHZ CORSAIR) no luck.
I checked power supply outpute V-works well.
I disable USB (this is error in event viewer)-Now there is not event viewer error with USB but still black screen.
I know about thread at dell webiste but I dont have warranty so dell cant change parts for me.I am keeping eye at this thread.
    There is no overheating.
So I am really pissed of because I spend lots of money and this system is not working right now.
BTW:There is no issue in 2d aplications as 3dsmax,CAD,PS.
    Thank you for help.
