"dell certified" sticks are nothing special. they seem to be using either nanya or samsung in their latest bunch of systems. what is important is that it matches their specs, if your system is mission critical.

the mSATA SSD that the M4600 is qualified on is the samsung one, cant remember the exact model number but its a 128GB unit which is only available to OEM's.

I'm using an Intel 310 soda creek mSATA SSD without any issues.

The p/n for the Samsung 128GB drive (PM800 mSATA) is MZMPA128HMFU.

Thanks much, I am likely to go that route, as the Samsung 128GB SSD seems to be priced about twice the cost of the 80GB Intel SSD.

Well, for piece of mind, you are certainly entitled to your choice. For what it is worth, I am a "hardware guy" and a Computer Engineer by day.

Pick a name brand with good reviews, and you'll be just fine. No reason to spend the extra money and get "Dell certified."

I've been doing this for a long time...

Just saw this laptop and I must say Im quite impressed. Numpad and trackpoint in a 15in laptop. Might be enough to lure me back to dell from thinkpads.

Does Dell make any pre-configured models of the M4600?? I cannot find anything. HP makes a number of their Elitebook workstations in pre-config format, and they sell very well. Am I missing something on the M4600s??

No. Dell never does pre-configured for the Precision lineup.

The new machine arrived last night (M4600 i7-2720QM 4 core chip Windows 7 Pro 64bit), it's quite solid and I'm pleased with it so far, screen is clear and crisp, keyboard keys have a nice response to them. I popped off the keyboard and installed 8GB of ram, turned the machine over and removed the 2GB put in by Dell as part of their build and installed the other 8GB of ram. It was quite easy to remove the keyboard trim with a slightly-filed-down edge of my plastic library card.

The problems started when attempting to install Kaspersky Internet Security 2011 - major disaster. 5 hours later I gave up, restored the machine to it's prior state, and this morning telephoned Kaspersky. The problem seems to be that TrendMicro antivirus is installed on the machine by Dell as part of the build, and Kaspersky Internet Security is completely incompatible with that software (and prior versions of Kaspersky, for that matter). What a pain in the butt. It would be nice if Kaspersky would either a) handle machine preparation itself as part of the install, or b) provide idiot-proof instructions/cook book on exactly how to prep the machine for installation.

Either way, hopefully Kaspersky can review the machine info their tool collected this morning and tell me what needs to be done.

Overall I believe the M4600 is going to a great machine - so far I'm most impressed.
