Thanks, jharrop! The tutorial and the compatibility table will be handy. Hopefully it will be updated with newer processors, as long as their TDP remains the same.
Regarding the slot, I was actually talking about the CPU socket used in the Precision.
I wonder if I can simply buy a CPU off the shelf, or if it needs to be specific.

CPU-Z says it is socket 988B rPGA.

By the way, it also says my motherboard is model 08V9YG A00, chipset Sandy Bridge rev 09, southbridge QM67 rev 04. And I'm running BIOS A08.

Not sure whether my success was sensitive to any of that!

A quick question for those with slot load DVD drives. Does it make yucky noise when the laptop is turned on and when the drive sucks in and eject disks?

    Hello:

I am considering purchasing an M4600 as an AutoCAD platform, but I need to know if it will (using the e-port replicator) simultaneously run a 2560x1600 display (30" Apple cinema display) and a 1600x1200 display (Wacom Cintiq 21UX). Larger screen would be displayport>DVI-D, smaller would be DVI.

Conversations with Dell indicate that this would work with all listed graphics card options, can anyone confirm? Is there a superior choice (AMD Firepro)? Would the laptop's own screen still be functional with this scenario?

I realize that in 169 pages there may be an answer to my question, but I couldn't find it by searching. Any links or references would be appreciated.

    TIA.

    Best, Marcel

Just got my $720 Precision M4600 from the Outlet. Fully loaded with 1080p wled, 2720qm, 8gb ram, 500 gb hd, backlit kb, bluetooth, webcam, fingerprint reader, and 9 cell battery. Condition was refurbished and the case looks pretty much new except for some minor scuffs on the lid.

I put in a 32 gb mydigitalssd MSATA drive and it is running Win7 very snappily and installed without a hitch. Capacity is 29.8 gb, Win7 along with a few small programs (Norton 360, all the dell utilities, Google Chrome/Earth/Picasa, drivers, spotify, and other misc programs) takes up 16.7 gb. Add the 2 gb page file and I will have 10.1 gb of free space on the SSD

I can play Skyrim, Civ 5, and COD: Blackops at native res on high setting with no noticeable lag. Will try Autocad/Microstation when I get some projects.

I also had ordered mine with the Discount Coupon last week.
Still waiting to receive. Hopefully, it will be great, as well.
