Anyone installed a Samsung 830 series into their M4600? Is any mounting hardware required? I'm trying to decide between these two 830 part numbers for my M4600 arriving this week, the only difference I can see is they come with potentially different mounting hardware.

If it's like most other companies, it's the same unit but the desktop version comes with a 2.5 to 3.5 mounting bracket. Other than that, the only difference in the model number is the D or N.

Some other models will give you a different migration kit if you buy desktop or notebook. In this case, it doesn't really say.

It does say 2.5 though, so it shouldn't be a problem.

That's exactly what it looks like to me. The "N" came out today and sold out within hours, whereas the "D" has been / is still available, same price, and w/ software offers. I find it odd people held out for the N version (why?) and then I read this:
That sounds wrong to me (so long as the screw holes are standardized, why would a thinner profile matter?).

So I assume the D model will fit fine, just making sure I'm not crazy / don't get surprised by a drive that won't fit in my M4600 without some kind of kit.

I'm looking to purchase an m4600, and I have a few questions that I can't seem to get answered clearly by Dell. Perhaps actual knowledgeable owners can help?

    1) How many DIMM slots? Some Dell reps say 4, some that it depends on how many DIMMs I actually order. I know that I need a Quad core to use all 4, but surely all models have 4?

    2) Do the internal ports support SATA III?. Some Dell reps say they're all SATA II, some that it depends on whether I order an SSD from them, in which case I get SATA III. Surely the internal ports support SATA III?

    3) How badly do I want Optimus vs. the ATi option? I intend to use this system for software development and no gaming, so high-powered video really just spends battery. I'd get it with only the HD3000 if I could.

    Thanks in advance!

Four. Two under the keyboard, two on the underside of the chassis.

I believe only ports 0 and 1 support SATA III and OptiBay and mini-SSD are both SATA II.

Personally, can't say. I've got the IPS panel and it's discrete only, but I do get about three hours of battery life. This is with Core i7-2820QM, Quadro 2000M, 16 GB RAM, 240 GB OCZ Vertex 3, running Linux.

You may want to be aware that according to the Dell Precision M4600 manual, page 117 notes different physical DIMM slot configurations per CPU:

    Intel Core i5 / i7 Dual Core = 2 physical slots, 16GB max (8x2)
    Intel Core i7 Quad Core / i7 Quad Extreme = 4 physical slots, 32GB max (8x4)

Someone verifies this. Unfortunately this appears to be missing from the specifications section of the manual :\

Unofficially, this is what I get when I run hdparm:

    Code:
    /dev/sda:
     Timing cached reads: 15774 MB in 2.00 seconds = 7893.80 MB/sec
     Timing buffered disk reads: 1604 MB in 3.00 seconds = 534.24 MB/sec
