Dell only gives the option to configure the M4500 with a blu-ray writer at a pretty high price.

Does anyone know if it's possible to easily (cheaply?) replace the DVD drive of an M4500 to a blu-ray reader/DVD writer?

 

Yes you should be able to swap the DVD drive for a BR writer, provided you get one with the right thickness and switch the face places. That said, it still won't be cheap.

 

I'm confused about which SSDs are available. I see a 128MB Encrypted Mobility Solid State Drive for $600 and a 128MB Mobility Solid State Drive for $550. Is there a difference in hardware? Or, is the $50 premium just for Dell setting up encryption in Windows in advance?

I'm also confused about why I don't see this option when selecting a primary hard drive. I only see it when selecting a secondary hard drive. I assume I can setup a 128MB SSD in encrypted mode as a boot disk. Right?

Hi all,

I have a M4500 that seems to be pretty weak on battery life. Normal use with brightness down to 40% or so I only get about 2 hours. CPU temps seem a bit higher than Im used to seeing as well- 54-56 at idle. And the fan is constantly on when unplugged which seems a bit odd.

Anyone else running into this?

 

What are your specs? Mine sounds just like yours....6 cell, i820, 1600x900. I rarely use it on battery, though, so its not a big deal.

i7 x920
8G ram
Extended battery (8cell?)

Maybe what Im seeing is totally normal, but if so the battery life on this thing sux!

chad did you continue having these problems or did you find a work around ? I am looking at getting a m4500 and using it with a larger monitor when in the studio - but not if this is an issue..
