What wireless card do you have? I'd just uninstall the DCP stuff altogether and use the intel app for it.

As for your drivers question. You could just download everything and run the uopdates and you'll get a message if you already have that driver or even a newer version installed...takes some time to do but at least you'll get everything up-to-date.
If you did a clean install you should really follow the order for installing drivers from the Dell site http://support.dell.com/support/topics/global.aspx/support/downloads/en/driver_install_order?~lt=print' This is very important.

And the service tag is on the bottom panel of your laptop on the white sticker

For a list of networks etc just right-click the icon in you system tray and click "network center" or "connect with a network"

I don't have a white sticker on the bottom of my laptop, but I can see where one would have been! I guess it's been removed for some reason... probably because it's been sold without a warranty or because it's a refurb. I'm not sure.

I've just reinstalled vista and I'm going to follow those intructions you posted about what to install and in what order. Thanks for the help.

Thanks to your help I've got my system up and running. It's very nearly complete, but the last step I have to complete is the Broadcom Unified Security Hub. Basically, it's the only thing with a yellow exclamation next to it in device manager. I've managed to get everything up and running without installing the DCP software which is good.

I've downloaded the A07 Production Firmware for Broadcom Unified Security Hub (BCM5880) from the dell website, but when I try to run the ushupgrade64 file it returns a message saying; ERROR: Could not detect USH.

How do I complete this final part of the puzzle? Thanks again.

Anyone got any answers for my post on the previous page? :)

The laptop goes from sleep to off in the following situation:

If the laptop is in sleep, and you press the wifi catcher and it glows to indicate the presence of a signal...if you press the power button to wake the laptop up when the wifi catcher is still glowing, it turns the system off. Very strange!

Also...I think the lid is plastic, I took a multimeter to it and it measured as infinite resistance

You can't conclude anything from that. Not all metals are conductive, and magnesium is one of the metals that are not. Not that I am suggesting it's really metal - just that sticking a multimeter on it is not going to tell you.

But the resistivity of Mg is 43.9 nΩ·m, that's 50 Billionths of an Ohm per unit meter. Surely that renders it conductive?

this is has been covered again, and again, and again.

only the very tip of the screen is plastic, to provide a "window" for the antennae inside.

people have actually disassembled it and taken photos of the inside, it has the magnesium recycling logo on it. (i think you mentioned weegie)

in addition to this, one poster even scratched the disassembled LCD back panel, on the inside, and the lusture of the scratches confirm its magnesium.

if you search around you can probably find the pics.

i have no clue with regards to whether magnesium can conduct electricity or not, but even if it can, whatever coating or finish dell uses on the outside might not be conductive.

For those who use the stock Dell drivers on y'alls M4400 - do you prefer 76.07 or 76.53?
    And why, may I ask?
76.07 seems to make my fan run less often than 76.53 on my system, but it could be the newer System Software package as well - not sure.
76.07 seems to allow my GPU to go up to ~62 degrees before the fan kicks in & runs for a minute or so.
Please note - my fan doesn't run all the time - with light usage like composing emails in Outlook, or web browsing most sites, it only comes on every so often, and only for a minute or so.
    Ambient temperature is ~ 25 degrees & I don't use a cooler.
