Precision 7750/7550 release date?

XPS 17 / 5750 somehow doesn't have a numeric keypad... That's a non-starter :-\

 

they never had one, it's a macbook competitor.

 

Looking at the back heatsink grilles again:



Those grilles look like they are easily twice the area of the 7530/7540's. Maybe we'll have giant fans that blast all air directly behind, instead of to the side.

 

After my initial "what the heck are they thinking" reaction, I've come around on the idea, the larger grilles on the back should make up for missing the ones on the side. And having all of the hot air go out the back makes the most sense.
Remains to be seen if the fans themselves are any larger than before. Larger fans could help cover the difference as well. (Hopefully they could make the system a little bit quieter, too.)

Seems like there is a lot of empty space on the chassis where the side grilles used to be, but it probably can't be used for data ports because the fans are occupying that space. One thing that I would really like to see which would not take up that much space is a separate stereo audio input port like the M6800 and earlier have. I actually do make use of this periodically but I will have to find a USB solution when I upgrade, so it seems. All of the (not huge/expensive) USB audio adapters that I can find only offer mono input for a headset mic.

Has a new Precision model line ever been released with a previous generations' video card? I'd be quite surprised if it doesn't release with Ampere support. And, I also would look forward to a Ryzen Pro based Precision. Currently, 77x0s have 4 x NVMe slots that have the combined bandwidth of... one NVMe slot... and that's not forecast to change in a long time.

I speak from direct experience: 3 X striped NVME 2 TB drives on PCIe 4.0 equates to at least 8/6 GB/s read/write speeds, which makes loading and saving VMs as easy as flicking a switch. Whatever power budget needed for the I/O would probably be made up by the 7nm technology AMD is bringing to bear. I want my cake, and I want to eat it too

 

M6700 and M6800 both had Kepler.
7720 and 7730 both had Pascal.

Granted, in this case, they offered slightly upgraded cards for the newer generation... They can't do that this time, because the RTX 5000 is already a maxed out TU104 chip. Upgrading to a TU102 chip makes no sense given the power limitations. TU104 is already power-starved at 110W. You can see this because of the marginal difference in performance in RTX 4000 vs RTX 5000. Adding more CUDA cores without also raising the power draw does almost nothing to improve performance.

They can't launch 7750 with Ampere. That would be cool, but it's just not ready yet.

Thanks for your knowledge and insight. Looking carefully at the video with the words "Yet, more powerful AI and VR capable **" it seemed to me that they could be making that claim against the previous generation of Precisions, but the asterisks could also mean they they are not making that claim.

In summary, for a high-end mobile workstation enthusiast business crowd like this, the new 7750 is likely coming out with the same graphics as the last model, and a CPU that is effectively the same as the last model. As Dell Mano pointed out, it will probably have the best graphics performance of all the mobile workstations, but will also likely have a third of the battery life, as it is a rare day I'll get 3 hrs of battery life out of my 7730. Nothing too exciting here, by the looks of things, but let's allow the possibility to be surprised.

 

Yes... Basically can't blame Dell too much, though, they're just launching a refresh with Intel's new line of CPUs, and including the best NVIDIA GPU available at the time, which is what they always do. Timing just doesn't line up for a nice big surprise this time around. (Maybe there's a surprise coming that we haven't seen yet.) I'm more excited about next year's model, if Tiger Lake (10nm) + Xe iGPU + DDR5 + USB4 + Ampere all land at the same time that will be pretty cool. (That's not a sure thing quite yet, but there are hard rumors out to support each of them.)
