The grills look big, but each of four grills in 7540 has two parts, one is on the side in aluminium frame and the second part of the same opening is pointing partially downward. It is a cut in bottom plate and harder to notice in the pictures. If we take those also into account the older model still might have larger total area. Also openings can look bigger than they are in reality if the overall size of the new model is a bit smaller.

The bottom vents seems to be basically the same as the 7X30/7X40 as far as I can tell? The vents on the bottom are intake and the ones on the sides/back are outflow. (We like both of them to be as large as possible...)

The intake vents looks the same. I was referring to other ones. I marked them with red in the pictures below. It seems that those are missing from the new model. If we take also those into account old model might have larger total area for outflow. It hard to say without seeing the actual unit.

Very possible, but I am taking reference from the Ethernet, HDMI and power ports.

The thin bottom slits you reference make little difference to the heat dissipation, as air hardly ever passes out of those parts. Once again, let's wait and see; the 7550 and 7750 should be out this month, according to the slide decks.

So if I do not care about graphics performance, or a tiny increment in CPU, is 7740 better or 7750 or get whichever is cheaper?

It remains to be seen if the 7750 has any surprises that we don't know about, or if the cooling changes in the 7750 has any impact (positive or negative) on say what the maximum CPU turbo boost speed will be...
But as it looks right now, this is a truly incremental upgrade, probably the smallest incremental upgrade that we have ever seen in the Precision line. You could be just as happy with a 7740.

AMD has released its Ryzen Pro U-series CPUs, rated at 15 W.

I presume the 45 W H-series versions will follow not too long after, and these will compete with the Xeons.

Hopefully we see some of them in a Precision 7000-series notebook.

I doubt this is going to happen anytime soon. Same for ThinkPad P and HP ZBook models.

Of course not—workstations typically lag behind in updates anyway. I do hope to see these CPUs next year, though, as they represent a giant leap in efficiency and performance.

I'm not certain Dell and others will go AMD for their future workstations laptops, for various reasons.
