The real question is will the dell precision 7730 have an mxm slot like the older precision 7710 I have? I want to put a msi gtx 1070 in it.

The chipset has 2x SATA 3 ports - it is Sandy Bridge era. Already got him set up on Samsung 840s. It is performing fine, just starting to become unreliable. Lot of lock ups, blue screens, keyboard is worn out, already replaced battery. Screen is flickering in weird ways. He got it in spring 2012 and has been a heavy user since then - all said he has gotten awesome mileage out of it but excited at the prospect of 6 cores and a MUCH newer GPU (Quadro 2000m currently).

We are looking at just getting him a "cheap" Dell G7 15" to hold him over for $1k. He will keep it as a back-up after we get him in a new 7730.

Infuriated you? LOL. It is a professional grade workstation, not a toy for gamers. Professionals do not swap Quadro or Radeon Pro for GeForce.

The only reason I swapped out my quadro (4000m) was because it was dying (artifacts on load etc), at the time the gtx 1070 was better for rendering in 3ds max which is what I use quite a bit for my university projects. It was also quite a bit cheaper than let's say a quadro p5000 mxm. It's true that people don't swap out these cards but if dell makes the same style cards for all there whole precision lineup then it makes sense because the graphics will be plug and play.
Yes it infuriates me because other companies have not done this but Dell has. We will have to wait and see what happens I guess.

It may seem that I play games on this laptop but why would I have an alienware 18 then? I have these laptop for specific things. I don't just make a workstation laptop into a gaming laptop just because I feel like it. If I wanted do that I would have gone with a significantly cheaper counterpart Clevo.

The GPU board design is very odd, especially including the display outputs directly on the board - if that became a requirement it could be a part of why they had to abandon the MXM standard. As for the loss of interchangeability - although MXM is a physical standard, more often than not you cannot move cards between laptops even when they are the same vendor due to BIOS and firmware limitations or restrictions so it is not like you are giving up much there. This new format also probably allows for a slightly lower z-height which allows for a slimmer laptop which has become the desired trait these days, even on the big hulking workstations it seems.

A bit of topic here but it says in your sig you had an alienware 18, did you ever encounter a black screen issue. I have two alienware 18's (vikings) and they have this problem.

I had the original M18x back in 2011 with Sandy Bridge - beast! It was a great laptop, only issue I ran into was a failing GPU which ultimately they fully refunded the ($3700) laptop over. It had SLI and one of the 2 GPUs died - they didn't have them back in stock for 6 weeks so offered me a full refund 15 months after purchase. Which of course I accepted - that experience is one of the top reasons I 100% believe in and stick to Dell support. They have always taken care of me.

Fair enough, I've had a good experience with their precision lineup especially the one I have as of now 7710. Has an mxm slot for that gtx 1070 I have in it, has been stress tested for 72 hours straight before. Zero issues with cooling, quiet and a beast. The processor overclocks to 4GHz whilst being undervolted, you would expect that from your alienware with a 6820hk which is UNLOCKED! Temps never go above 80c, liquid metal is just amazing.

It's a shame alienware 18's run into many issues. Oh well, seems like I need to replace the motherboards then.
