    So my 7720 died yesterday.
It came up - but (surprisingly) the battery was low (it was full when I put it away 1 week ago during my vacation).
I logged in and left my desk for a moment - when I came back it was dead and the blue ring on the power cable was dark and the 7720 didn't power up anymore. No smell or smoke.
Everytime I plug in the power cable the blue ring turns dark (tested with several power supplies).
DELL is showing up tomorrow to change the motherboard (hope that's all needed).

    Cheers,
    Alex

BTW: It was was on BIOS 1.9.0

So is the general consensus on 1.8.4 a go? I'm at 1.6 and am frightened :)

BTW, I went through three 7710s too, all died on BIOS updates (each time the mobo and video card replaced). They finally gave me a 7720 as a replacement.

DELL replaced mobo and video card yesterday and everything was fine.
Replacement mobo was on 1.1.2 and I updated it to 1.8.4.

    Cheers,
    Alex

Well, if past is prologue then expect to replace them every time you update the BIOS.

I had this issue for a while with my M6800. Turned out that it was the wireless mouse dongle causing issues. Unplugging this fixed the issue. I'm not sure if there was a short in that particular receiver or what, but I got a new receiver and all was kosher again. If you start to have the issue again this could be something to look into.

I've gotten tired of the tb16 docking station glitching and i'm trying to use a Pro2X eport replicator that i had laying around. I can not for the life of me get Display Port working.

Windows saw the new monitor, but would only display a black screen. The intel graphics card settings util was seeing the laptop display, but not the DP monitor. the P4000 was seeing the monitor but not the laptop display. I tried turning off the intel graphics in the bios, and forcing both to use the P4000, the nvidia utility is seeing both displays now, but the monitor still is all black. On top of that the laptop display is flickering like mad (it's set for 60hz refresh rate though) now.

    Any thoughts?

EDIT: I've tried playing around with the bios settings some more to no avail. The rj-45 on the dock works, the esata works, so do the usb ports.... everything but the damn display ports.

Received my 6th 7720 replacement. This time due to an issue with the P4000 card and they had no parts in stock to replace it. Had to fight with Dell for a week because they kept sending configurations for my approval that we're not "like or better" than my machine. Guess they have refurb stock to try and replace with. Ended up with a new custom build with my same exact specs. Just received it and it was damaged by FedEx, bent chassis. Onto the 7th replacement now and back to the back and forth games of getting a system with specs that at least match mine.

Can a backlit keyboard be added to a 7720 after the original configuration did not have it? Is the MOBO the same and have the plug for it? I ask because Dell is sending me a replacement without the backlit keyboard and I don't feel like going back and forth over this if I can simply swap it out from my old machine.

Yes, you can totally swap the keyboard from non-backlit to backlit or vice versa, the motherboard connector is the same.

    Hi,

    BIOS 1.9.1 is available. Who's first? :)

    Cheers,
    Alex
