Precision 7550 & 7750 Owners' Thread

    The Precision 7550 only has the option to add SSDs with capacity up to 2TB in the online configurator on the Dell website. And also the specifications list only 2TB as maximum option. However, there exist 8TB SSDs, such as

    Can I manually upgrade the Precision 7550 with 8TB SSDs? I use Linux as operating system.

    I'm not sure about the display upgrade

    And don't upgrade the bios (unless you want the "security patch" in exchange for some performance). I'm pretty sure the new BIOS's disable undervolting because of plunderbolt. (Maybe you found a workaround on the newer BIOS that disabled undervolting). The newer BIOS's should lock undervolting, so for now, there is no way to undervolt unless you downgrade the BIOS which I think requires a long workaround if possible at all.

    Also, 1877 is a decent improvement over the same non-undervolted CPU. However, the real benefits of undervolting will show in a long test such as Cinebench R20 and R23. R15 is too short to induce much throttling.

    If the edited nvram value didn't work for you, you simply need to do a clear cmos, removing battery and the cmos battery ;), but it should works and undervolting will be unlocked ;)

    Does anybody know a good cover for the 17 inch 7750/7760?

    I need something with a lot of protection but it also can't look too radical or attention catching. It can't be too big (I don't mind if it's a cover or backpack)

    I found this backpack by Dell (at $45, it's probably at least worth a try):

    I've been using the same Swissgear backpack for about seven years now, and it is showing no signs of failing me any time soon. It has a section specifically for 17" laptops, and I've used this for traveling with my 17" Precisions over the years with no problems.

    I currently have a 7740 with NVIDIA Quadro RTX 3000 and i9-9980HK processor, and UHD display. I like this laptop so much that I am looking at a "backup" which would be a 7750 with NVIDIA Quadro T1000 and i7-10875H processor, and UHD display. The processor is basically a wash with what I have now, but the Quadro T1000 appears to be a significant downgrade from the RTX 3000. I use the Intel UHD graphics, typically, and do not rely on the video card for display. Mainly what the card gets used for is video (CUDA) applications (e.g. - CloneBD). The CUDA acceleration in CloneBD makes short work of processing FHD and UHD video files. I am not looking to do any complex gaming programs or run multiple 4K monitors or anything like that. I was curious if anyone else has had a chance to compare the T1000 with the RTX 3000 and whether there is that significant of a perceived performance difference. Thanks!

    Well.... you're in luck since I have an XPS 15 7590 with a 1650 mobile (50W). It's basically identical to the T1000 except for CAD applications that use double precision.

    Obviously since it's an XPS, I can't get the full 50 watts all the time

    I have done some benchmarks after repasting the GPU and doing an undervolt.

    For reference, my GPU speed is at 1455 mhz at 35-37 watts.

    Here is the only benchmark that I have. It's a Blender Benchmark with the Classroom scene rendered with CUDA. It's Blender 2.92.
    It took 10m 1s (601 seconds) to render.

    And yes, it's a significant downgrade from the RTX 3000.

    Let me know what benchmarks you want done, and I will try to do them for you. Just remember the slight wattage difference of a few hundred mhz. It's not a massive difference though, and my results should be somewhat representative of the T1000.

    Zhongze, thanks...that confirms some of the reviews I read on the T1000, with comparos against the RTX 3000. In many cases, it appeared to me that the T1000 performance was just a bit better than half of the RTX 3000, in some cases maybe about 75% of the RTX 3000 performance. You're right, it does appear to be a substantial performance hit. But, for what I intend to use it for, the T1000 would be slower, but adequate. Now the question is whether I want to pay the price for it. I do like the 7760 you have on order. That would be my choice as well. I paid a bit over $2200, including tax, for my rig over a year ago from Dell Outlet. At the time I thought it was pricey, but in retrospect it was a superb bargain. I will keep checking the Dell Outlet site as well and see what comes up.

    Hi, which frequency (monitored) to expect using an RTX 3000 or 4000 or 5000 in a 7550 with 7750 vbios (higher TDP) while gaming ? I'm trying to find out which gpu is worth upgrading to :/
    Also does someone have front and back picture of a 7550/7750 RTX card ? I would like to know which voltage controller they are using (not mosfet).

    Looking into the possibility of remapping the keyboard "CE" and "+/-" keys (above the numeric keypad) into keys that are more useful.
    I use SharpKeys for this sort of thing. SharpKeys doesn't handle keyboard key remapping itself, it just writes values into a registry setting that Windows recognizes for key mappings.
    The problem is, SharpKeys doesn't have entries for these keys listed. So, I'd like to submit an update / pull request for SharpKeys to add them to the list.

    So I was wondering if someone with a 7550 or 7750 could try this out for me?
    * Download and install SharpKeys: https://github.com/randyrants/sharpkeys/releases/download/v3.9.2/sharpkeys392.msi
    * Open up the application
    * Click: "Add", then "Type key"
    * Press the "CE" key on the keyboard and record the code that SharpKeys shows (probably: E0_[some number])
    * Same for the "+/-" key

    (I could do it myself once my 7560/7760 arrives, but that's a good 6-7 weeks away...)
