Do the folks on the phone usually negotiate a bit?

I used the chat but yes, you can negotiate over the phone too. If they don't bite first, tell them that you will go with HP or Lenovo if they don't give you a fair price ;)

Thanks to @Capt.Gil and his instructions I was able to successfully replace my screen with a superior Samsung panel, LTN156HL01-102. Unfortunately, the panel I received had a defect so I didn't do any measurements and am awaiting a replacement... but I just wanted to confirm that this replacement does work. I assume most modern panels with eDP ports will work.

In addition, I was able to determine the exact model number of the panel that came with my machine (1080p Ultrasharp) as LP156WF6-SPB2. I can't seem to find any reviews on this exact model, nor am I positive the difference between SPB2 and SPB1 or whatever, but it's possible the screen door effect is only present on the SPB2 model.

Received my 7510 today at work. Already perturbed.

I ordered it with the "better" 1080p display (labeled "FHD IPS" on the site). They shipped it with the "worse" 1080p display (labeled "45% color gamut" on the site). The quote I got from the rep lists the better one, but the item listing on the order details / shipping status page lists the worse one. I might not have thought to check except I noticed that the display has a distinct yellow tint when I first turned it on.

    *sigh*

Can't say anything else yet. I ordered a Samsung 950 Pro SSD separately and it does not arrive until tomorrow.

    [Edit]
Nevermind, the rep quoted the IPS display for our 5510's but the worse display for the 7510 (despite what I asked for). My fault for not looking the quote over in fine enough detail, I saw 1080p and figured I was good.
Not worth the hassle to return/replace when I can replace the screen myself with the panel mentioned by Div033 and others above for $70ish. I'll see if I can correct the color on the current display first (not super hopeful).

    [Edit 2]
    @Div033
Where did you purchase your display from? What kind of defect did it have? I need zero dead pixels and would like to get it from a place that will be willing to treat any dead pixels as a defect. Many shops seem to think up to 5 dead pixels are OK.

Anybody else find their screen goes blank after the laptop is connected to external monitor?

At work I have a docking station, external monitor connected to it.

When I undock, I very often have a blank laptop screen. Nothing I can do (WIN-P, or FN-F8) brings it back to life. Machine is still running fine (can RDP to it).

Eventually have to power down (hard - holding power button for a few seconds).

Sometimes it will be ok on next book, but most often, I have to physically remove the battery and reboot to get it working again.

    I suspect software...

I actually was surprised to find my replacement panel arrive today, just 30 minutes ago. I've already installed the panel and it's perfect - victory! Neither panel had any dead pixels, but the first one definitely had some damage along the bottom... oddly only with blue pixels. What is it with me and blue color problems? Anyway I've attached a picture of the damage/defect. The seller was extremely quick to send out a replacement and offered cross-shipping after I dropped off the bad panel at USPS (which they paid for).

The seller I bought from has a great return policy so I highly recommend them. Here's the auction I bought:
    http://www.ebay.com/itm/281907614725
(laptop_screen is the seller's name in case this link dies someday)

Here's Capt.Gil's post on replacing the screen:
    http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...ns-press-release.782179/page-79#post-10231839

I experienced something very similar to him when making the upgrade. The bezel seems near-impossible at first to remove, but with enough working at it (carefully) I was able to catch it with my finger nail and lift - to the point where it gave and came off. The port is really simple to deal with as well - you only have to lift the tape back to where the port is exposed. Don't try to take it off entirely since it might be taped to the eDP cable itself, and trying to completely remove it might stress the cable too much. On mine there was also a small strip of blue rubber tape over the port which can easily and safely be removed. The clasp mechanism is attached at the sides, so gently pry upwards on each side to remove the clasp and gently pull it out.

Time to calibrate! Should be ~97% sRGB but we'll see...

Does anyone have any experience with Ubuntu on the 7510? There's some oddities in the ordering.. for instance you can get the IGZO display on the 5510 but not the 7510 with Ubuntu. No one at Dell has been able to give me a reason why.. I have IGZO on my M3800 with Ubuntu and it's fine. Also, Energy Star is not compatible with Ubuntu on the 7510 (it's ok on 5510).. no answer on that either.

So I'm looking at the FHD IPS Precision 7510 with ECC memory and the cheapest SATA there is so I can replace it. I'm curious if anyone has any experience with the Linux version. I've been happy with the M3800. My only complaint is the build quality is borderline lego-ish. I dropped it once off my desk and it dang near dented the corner so badly I couldn't open the thing. I did put in a secondary M.2 SSD and threw Red Hat on it with no problem. That's really helpful for me.

Div033, can you give us any insights why did you choose that particular display as replacement? Was it the only one that fits? Was your decision based on any comparisons or recommendations? If so, could you provide any info in order to get us more familiar with the subject.

@Div033, thanks for the feedback. The more I look at it, the more I realize this screen has to be replaced. Aside from the poor color, the viewing angle is really bad. (I can't observe any "screen door" effect though!) I haven't even booted Windows yet (sitting at Acronis True Image screen right now) so I haven't checked the panel manufacturer/model.

I have it sitting right next to my M4800 which also has a non-IPS 1080p display, and the M4800 looks absolutely spectacular in comparison.

I had seen that eBay seller and I'm also looking at laptopscreen.com (http://www.laptopscreen.com/English/screen-part-number/LTN156HL01-102/). I'll decide and buy one next week.
