So I talked to Dell about my screen issue again. Rather than going through their repair service, I asked if I could return the computer. They agreed to send a replacement computer with identical specifications. Once it arrives, I will ship back the original one. I'm a happy camper!

Did you have to pay for the second one or are they sending it based off hopes that you won't keep both?

No additional charges, as far as I'm aware. I didn't ask what would happen if I didn't return the computer within the specified timeframe. But they have my credit card number, so I'm not about to pull any stunts.

By the way - I learned an interesting bit of information. Their normal return policy is 30 days from the date of invoice, but they give you an extension when they issue a replacement (since it takes time to ship you a new computer). They told me I have an extra 15 days to return the computer. So my deadline is 45 days from the original invoice.

I believe they give you two weeks to ship the old computer back and if it's not shipped by then they bill your card.

At least, that's what I was told when I exchanged a machine at work due to an extremely mushy keyboard (we bought 7 identical machines and only one exhibited this issue, so I asked for a replacement).

This solved my problem! Thanks so much.

For anyone else trying to install Windows 10 on a new m.2 drive (samsung 950 pro in my case), this is the solution. I am assuming the difference is the Microsoft image contains the correct drivers and the Dell USB key does not.

    Thanks again.

I recently received my 7510 and was glad to see coil whine wasn't an issue with the device. I do, however, have a couple concerns.

    1. The fans never completely stop, they're always on, at least at a very low RPM. I don't know if this is normal or not. I have a 6820HQ and M2000M. I haven't been able to find any sort of control in BIOS or Windows for that matter.

    2. The speakers can cause the trackpad buttons to vibrate at higher volumes, creating a very annoying rattling noise. This is most present on Windows 10 when adjusting the volume through the slider in the notification tray - the noise that makes resonates with the trackpad buttons causing tons of rattling.

I was wondering if anyone else could say whether or not they experience this. I'm debating either returning or exchanging but first I want to make sure it's not a feature. I already had a tech come replace the speakers when I thought it was a blown speaker.

If Dell Power Manager is installed, you can access its config from Windows Power Options control panel and selecting the "Dell Command Power Manager" option on the left. There is a "Thermal management" config section in there which is the best I think you are going to get for fan control. I keep my systems on the "Quiet" setting unless I'm running a big job, but this caps the CPU speed.

Thanks for the tip, though it wasn't exactly as you described. I did manage to find the setting, it was a hidden power plan "quiet". I assume it showed up after I installed Dell Power Manager.

I think I'm still going to replace the machine though, or return it. I can't stand the rattle from the speakers and the tech did a shoddy job putting the palm rest back on, so now it has a large bump near the edge. Quickly losing my patience with Dell...

Edit: So I managed to fix the rattle. After the tech reassembled the machine I noticed a large bump where the palmrest meets the aluminum edge and I sought to fix it. I took it apart and noticed there was an incorrectly seated part in the corner where the bump was present. I reseated it, put it all back together and voila - no more bump, no more rattle. I mean there's still a tiny amount of rattle, but it's far more acceptable.

How is everyone liking their trackpads? I'm on t440s right now and found that my old 8460w had the best trackpad I had ever used. Not a big fan of the Lenovo trackpad.

Also, I love the Lenovo keyboard (not necessarily the layout though). How is everyone liking their keyboards? I will be using my machine mostly for design work so typing is less important than it used to be, but may be using it for some python-based data analytics and therefore may be doing more typing than I anticipated.

I just ordered my 7510 minutes ago, so I can't yet personally speak to the trackpad, but I have to chime in on the Lenovo. They have the absolute WORST excuse for a Human Input Device I have ever encountered in my 26 years as a technology professional. I gave consideration to the Lenovo P50, but I couldn't forgive them for the continued use of such a blunder in design and the whole Fn / Ctrl key thing (even though they did put out a BIOS update to fix it)

I'm a little put off by the Home/End key thing, but I don't use the number pad all that often, so I can just keep numlock off and I'll get used to where the keys are... but it was still a significant lapse on Dell's part regardless.

I'll provide any worthwhile feedback on the trackpad once I get my 7510 in a week or so...
