UHD = IGZO (3840x2160). You've got the UHD IGZO screen and replaced it with UHD IGZO?

Do I need a workstation or just a stronger workhorse? I don't run any CAD or heavy-rendering programs but I'm starting to do a lot more video editing. My limited understanding is that a lot of that is handled by the CPU, not the GPU???

I usually get the highest-end Latitude that comes with a numeric keypad and dock (two must haves). When they get the TB dock to work, that will free me from the limit e-port choices, but I still need a numeric keypad. I run a lot of apps at the same time and have now added more video editing to the mix. I don't think my Latitude E6540 is keeping up with that (i7-4800MQ 2.7GHz 6M cache, 8GB Ram, AMD Radeon HD 8790M 2GB GDDR5, SSD hybrid hard drive). I was thinking of stepping it up notch to the 7510 or 7710.

I've read both threads, but will post in the 7510 since that is the more likely machine I would get.

----------- The rest of this post is just my workflow background for context...-------------

I currently own an E6540 (D830 and D820 before that). I'm docked 70% of the time on an E-Port Plus with two U3014's (replacing soon with UP3216Q) and a 3rd smaller monitor off the laptop's HDMI port. I have this exact setup in 2 locations and it has worked well for the last several years.

I'm a small business owner and do creative work (if you can call it that) throughout the day, interrupted by a steady fast-paced workflow of more mundane tasks. So, I like to keep all my apps up and running at the same time, spread across my monitors. I think this is a CPU and RAM issue, not a GPU issue, but I now find myself doing a lot more more video editing and the E6540 seems very slow.

I run these apps, pretty much all at the same time and bounce between them throughout the day.
Firefox (10 tabs) and chrome (20 tabs)
Excel (2-3 files at at time, but simple worksheets)
Snagit (screen capture and editing, 50x/day)
    Paperport 14 (scanning software)
Control My Nikon (tethering software, light editing)
Illustrator (usually open/close, not always opened)
    camtasia studio (video import, editing)
    Sony camcorder importing software (playmemories)
Misc (viber, wunderlist, 2 windows explorer, itunes, Quickbooks).

My guess is that only Illustrator and Camtasia put any stress on the GPU.

It would be nice to let the video import/encode run in the background while I go about the rest of my work. I can't do that now - system crawls. I was thinking about using a second dedicated machine, but I travel so much that carrying two is not a very attractive option.

Rule with RAM is, if you see yourself getting near the memory utilization in Task Manager, you could use more RAM. (Even if you see yourself using "only" 7.7 GB out of 8 GB, you're probably paging to disk a lot, more RAM will help.) I think 8 GB is pretty cramped for a workload like yours. The two browsers alone probably gobble at least 3 GB. Most recent Latitudes can go up to at least 16 GB though, so this may not require a whole new system.

Have you tried setting the process priority of your encode job to "Below normal" or "Low" to see if that increases your system responsiveness? I usually do this when running video encodes, it doesn't seriously affect how long the job takes in my case but it allows the CPU to always yield to other tasks when they need it so they will seem more responsive. You can set the priority in task manager, but some apps have a way to toggle it from within the interface as well.

(Changing priority won't help if your job uses serious resources beyond the CPU, which would indeed be the case if you are running low on RAM, you will be stressing the disk a lot for paging.)

    hi guys

i been researching into usb-c on my laptop and there are some issues with it. i wanted to check with other owners to make sure it's confirmed

    1. seems the port is usb-c 3.1 gen 1(5gb/s) which blows... i wonder how we can get gen 2.

    2. some of my usb-c cables dont fit and even if they fit/power as soon as you transfer data, it disconnects...

    3. some of my usb-c to usb-c cables are rated at USB 2.0 Speed???? i was able to confirm that by using usb-c to usb 3.0 a type, where I get 350MB/s vs 40MB/s for above cable

finally, could someone recommend me a working usb-c to usb-c cable that transfers speed at max rate?

    thank you :)

Hahaa you caught it. I meant the FHD in reply to the FHD model in the quote. So yes I ordered an FHD first but the resolution didn't cut it for me so I sent it back.

I have a 7510 working perfectly fine and I'll quickly chime in here :D.

    1. There's usually a few years lag time between the protocol being finalized and widespread adoption. Connectors are easy to change, protocols and certification isn't, it'll take a couple of years for you to see 3.1 Gen2 stuff.

    2. Inspect port for dirt, dust, damage etc. If none of those exist, sounds like a bum port.

    3. USB cables built to specifications have no bearing on speed of the transfer. Cables not properly built cannot negotiate the appropriate link-speed, that's when you'd see bad speeds, assuming it works at all. Also, keep in mind that a lot of devices that currently has a USB-c port may not be be SuperSpeed capable. For example, all of my current phones have type c ports, yet all of them only support USB 2.0
Type-C is merely a connector, you can't automatically assume that its SuperSpeed capable.

    Hope this helps.

P.S. Almost forgot, a Google engineer named Benson Leung has been testing type-c cables for compliance (and also busted OnePlus for selling non-compliant cables), just look at his list and find yourself the cheapest compliant cable there is.

Just my luck: there are a whole bunch of M7510 in the outlet, and was tempted to order one.

But the "Save 25% on any Dell Outlet Precision mobile workstation (offer ends 6/13/16 11:59p ET)" coupon they have posted is actually expired. :(

You most likely don't need a new machine.

I'd recommend maybe upgrading your ram and moving to a REAL SSD.

That hybrid drive is NOT doing you any favors.

Look for a line item like this on your itemized list or invoice:

    MOD,ASSY,BASE,QC2,W/T-C,7710

You are looking for "W/T-C". You will not be able to see this until after you place your order. Cancel and re-order if you need to. The chat reps will not be able to tell you if it has this option.
