I think it would work better from a hardware standpoint if it can work on the m4600 just because the heatsink is much better than the later generations. There are hit and miss reports of the 780m working in the m6600 with more misses than hits. But since i already have the 780m and the m4600 its not like I have to invest to try it out. If it doesnt work I can just turn around and sell it online. I just figured it would be a fun experiment to try out :)

I also already have the 240w for my m4600 so that works out as well.

Cant wait to finish up school hopefully in a day or two, start working something local and put a little time into modding before I am off to Korea.

This would be fun to try in my estimation. The system seems to like it as the K3000M see here.
Maybe it just needs a vBIOS that it likes I guess but until I move forward with my Ranger upgrade the 780m is staying where its at lol

Wow, how can you use MXM 3.0b on M4600? I think you have to modify M4600 back cover for that... no way you can fit a 3.0b card in M4600

MXM 3.0a/b are the same slot, just the length of the card is different.

Which is why I said if I do try it out, I will be sacrificing 2x RAM slots because they will have to be removed in order to make it fit. I would probably just cover the top half of the card with copper mosfet heatsinks. I wouldnt be overclocking at all since I wouldnt want to add stress the mosfet capabilities. If I can get it working ill see about using the DVD drive for another fan or something who knows. These are just thoughts jumbling in my head. It all depends if the thing even works with the 780m which has been spotty at best.

I just like to repurpose my retired components, I dont like hardware sitting around and even more so dont like selling online because ebay sellers dont have any real protections.

If I went that route I would limit myself to the K5100M, that would be my cut off in terms of seeking performance.

Otherwise I would just try it with the m6100 since that works in the m6600 and are about 50 USD. Not much loss if it doesnt work.

So who's interested in a MXM 3.0b project?

Im not rich, but I can stretch for this GPU as the test GPU. The goal would be to get the m290x 4GB working on this laptop but I cant stretch 200 USD on a experiment.

The m6100 makes sense as a test GPU to try first since its officially supported in the m6600. I have not much interest in testing 780m mostly because I like having the dGPU connected to the screen directly for panel overclock to 90hz. I also have no idea when I will get the 1070 for my Ranger yet considering the price is 700 USD or there abouts.

If there are a couple of people interested then ill pull the trigger, as some of you guys are more knowledgeable than I when it comes to the details of the machine.

tl;dr m6100 looks to be the perfect test card, with the m290x 4GB being the end goal if the m6100 works out well.

So mmm... if its confirmed that the W5170M works with this laptop would be a upgrade from M5100? But honestly i don't see that big jump...

mmm the only "big difrerencies" i see are DirectX 12, OpenCL 1.2, OpenGL 4.3, Vulkan, Mantle, Eyefinity, Enduro, App Acceleration, HD3D compared to the M5100 who only supports DX11 FL 12 . But anyway those features could increase at least something on gaming? I mean i am testing this laptop now and i installed Battlefield 1 and it runs on FHD at medium settings on average 30 FPS and it's supposed to be a "demanding game" i think. Metro 2033 Redux by far i have been playing runs on FHD at high at average 30-45 FPS, which i think is great for such a little old GPU by today standars.
