Interesting - have you done read/write tests? On my Video Workstation I am getting in the 500 range for my single SSD (OS drive) and the same for the 3 drive RAID 0 using 7200 rpm SATA HDD. So 2 Evo 850's in RAID 0 are no better?

 

I couldn't agree more with you, I think many of us are in a similar situation. My M6600 is still kicking, being over 4 years old, it has a perfect keyboard layout (although I replaced it twice), survived way more abuse than any consumer-grade laptop would, has a VERY professional design / looks, and it even runs Witcher 3 smoothly! (Although not on the highest settings). A number of things on the 7710 seem worse - keyboard type / layout, lack of volume control, audio port on the right side, speaker positioning (anyone has any idea where they are?) etc... The only reason I'm certain I will go for 7710 is that I need a new machine with NBD support and accidental damage cover. And I need a powerful 17" machine. And we have an account with Dell.

I think this one can be answered straight away. All the sources / specs mention up to 3 internal storage options. We know there will be 2 M.2 slots, which means it's pretty much guaranteed there will be only single 2.5" SATA slot available. The lack of optical drives is a known fact.

 

I have seen many gains putting spinners in Raid 0. Not so much with the latest gen SSDs. Sure the numbers may be slightly higher but that doesn't result in actually seeing a difference. I'm just saying not being able to RAID SSDs shouldn't be a deal breaker for any brand laptop. I have seen a 4-5 sec faster boot up between the 850 Pro and 951 m.2 PCI-E SSDs.

I had those 850 Pros in Raid 0 in my HP zBook 17G2 too.

 

That seems sort of odd they would cut it down to one single 2.5" bay. I know they are reducing weight and size but they are also cutting out the DVD/CD slot and the expresscard slot. The current M6800 can be configured (on Dell website) with an mSata SSD in the minicard slot and 3 - 2.5" SSD's (if you count the DVD/CD slot). It didn't give me any error messages on the website when I configured it this way.

Certainly seems like a step backwards. You would think there would be room for 2 - 2.5" hard drive bays in addition to the M2 areas.

Has some informative pictures, and it is interesting to see where they have positioned ports etc. I want my power and Ethernet at the back, and a couple of USB ports there are nice too.

It is a very interesting thread. Sort of reminded me of Bokeh's excellent threads with pictures.

Would be nice to see more of Dell's 7710. Hopefully someone will get their hands on one sooner, rather than later.

 

What I liked about my M6600 (and M67/M6800) is that the fan exhaust was in the back. The P70/P50 exhaust the hot air to the sides. The HP zBook 17 G2, while it only has one fan, exhausts to the side also.
I think that is a bad design. I returned the zBook because I found my hand always getting hot air blown on it. +1 for Dell on that.

 

I'm curious to see how the successor to the M4800 turns out. I'd really like something smaller than my M6700, I really do like my M6700, don't get me wrong, but needs/priorities change. I always like the dual fan setup that Dell has. It has the potential to have greater airflow and as a result better heat transfer. I also agree with the exhausts at the back.

Really liking the almost inexistent bezel on the 5510, but it doesn't have a dock connector and that is a downside for me.

 

Truthfully, I like the Lenovo Thinkpad P50 and Thinkpad P70 more than the Dell Precisions (and I never thought I would ever write that). Of course, neither Lenovos or the Precisions have been released yet, so that may change. Especially if the build quality of the Dells is better than the Lenovos (which in the past it has been but how knows now).

The reason I will probably get the Dell Precision 5150, however, is because of the InfinityEdge display. As I mentioned elsewhere, "portability" is becoming paramount for me. The InfinityEdge allows a much smaller (and lighter) laptop.

 

Good point, though this is not such a big issue for me as while I use my M6600 in very hot temperatures, it is raised a good few inches off the desk, set a fair distance away from me and at an angle. My hands are really never very close to the sides. But it is definitely a design plus for Dell, as you said.

I just find it all a little bizarre that the person who started this entire thread, and whom I presume is also the person in the video of the 5510 (going by the name on the badge) has not chipped in to share more details or answer some of the questions that are coming up.

I also personally think that Dell should just give Bokeh a 7710 (for free and to keep) and perhaps a couple of the other new models, so that he can do one of his stellar threads with pictures and which will answer all our questions in one go.

I would not be surprised to find that Bokeh's threads have been responsible for persuading quite a few of just how good the Precision line is. Can't get better advertising than that.
