The 7710 will have 1 x 2.5" SATA drive bay & 2 x M.2 PCIe SSD slots. The 2.5" bay can also take a M.2 PCIe SSD in an interposer. The 2.5" connector is a dual type connector that can take both SATA drives and PCIe drives.

 

So I guess that means the 7510 also has just ONE 2"5 bay... That's a real bummer...

 

The 5510 will take multiple types vendors. The one thing that Dell Precision is doing this year is offering SSD's bases on performance categories. Dell will offer 4 different categories: Class 10: Value SSD (Not offered in Precision), Class 20: Mainstream SSD (offered in Precision), Class 30: Performance SSD (offered in Precision only), and Class 40: Best in Class Performance SSD (offered in Precision only).
These different classes of SSD's will have different benchmarks that they have to obtain for read/write performance. This way you are guaranteed that you are getting the class of SSD that you need/require. Customers will no longer have the issue of order multiple systems and having extremely varying performance from their storage.

Correct both the 7510 and the 7710 both have only 1 x 2.5" drive.
7510 supports up to 2 drives. They can be 1 x 2.5" and 1 x M.2 OR 2 x M.2 using an interposer for the second M.2 in the 2.5" bay.
7710 supports up to 3 drives. They can be 1 x 2.5" and 2 x M.2 OR 3 x M.2 using an interposer for the 3rd M.2 in the 2.5" bay.

 

Very interesting, thank you! Do you happen to know any examples of which type of SSDs are in the different classes? Also, as a comparison, do you know which class the XPS 15 is getting? (I think it is a PCM951, but it might vary)

I have a few more questions :

1. Will Raid 0 be offered if one chooses 2 identical M2 PCIE drives as the OS drive ? Is there really a difference in performance with Raid on these drives (real world read/write times).

2. Will the Quadro M5000M be available from the get-go or will that be realeased later?

3 Will they offer the 2TB Samsung EVO 850 as the SSD for the 2.5" bay or will we just have to order separately from other vendors?

4 Will the PremierColor 4K display be able to be calibrated? I already have the Dell UP3216Q (4K - 32") and want to make sure the colors on this new monitor come close.

I was able to borrow a pre-production Precision 5510 from a Dell rep in NC. The screen on it is measuring better than the IPS screen on the older M6700.

Gamut is more than 100% AdobeRGB Gamut, 98% of NTSC. Only lacking a tiny bit of deep blue. Small enough that it could be hardware variance on the panel or my colorimeter. I would call this 100% NTSC.

The Average Delta-E is a ridiculously low 0.70. The curves also show that very little calibration is being added, so it appears to be close to coming from the factory calibrated for 6500K.

Can we expect to see the same screen performance on the production 7510 and 7710?

 

At this type I can't reveal which vendors fall into which categories. We will be double checking within each category quarterly and moving the vendors into different categories during these reviews as needed.
I think the XPS 15 is using mainstream SSD's.

 

1. RAID 0, 1, & 5 is an option as long as all drives in the RAID match. These new M.2 drives are so fast compared to previous gen the only RAID I would consider would be RAID 1 to protect my data.
2. The NVIDIA Quadro M5000M will be available from day 1, as will all the other GFX cards we are offering.
3. At this time our max capacity SSD is 1TB. As always we are always evaluating new technologies to bring to Precision.
4. Yes it can be. Every PremierColor UHD panel ships with Dell PremierColor Color calibration software that allows the customer to select from a bunch of predefined calibrations and allows the user to fine tune their settings or it also allows you to input a defined calibration.
