Thanks for your reply. In that case, do you think it is safe to place another order without cancelling the 'error' order? Hate to call and on hold for hours..

I was never able to get a firm quote for the 9-cell battery to know how much it was. Sales said because it's an interior "part" and not an accessor, I had to go through support. Support said because I wanted to buy a part that hadn't come inside my machine, I had to go through sales.

I'd get in touch to be on the safe side. If you want to avoid time on hold, I've often had a much better experience working with chat agents for sales than over the phone. If you're not in a rush, you can also emailing sales and waiting the day or two it takes for a reply.

Given that the 7510 has an E-dock connector, I wonder if that means they'll work with the 9-cell battery "slice"; the older Precisions (and Latitudes) did, and while the weight would be awful, boy would the extra runtime be nice!

Seems likely that it will work with existing battery slices since it works with existing docks, but there hasn't been any confirmation.

This is what I did. So far, so good.

I tried calling but it's difficult to get anywhere because all but one rep I spoke couldn't even see my order. The one that did told me that the order is dead. I suppose this is Dell's way of ensuring nobody orders an non-configurable machine. It would be nice if it informed the customer, though.

And any idea what is the model of SSD used in 5510? Is it the same pm951 in xps15? if so, I had to replace it with either sm951 or 950pro later..

It is unlikely that Dell will commit to a specific model. What usually happens is they set performance requirements and then use one of several models of SSD that meet those requirements (not everyone will get the same one, necessarily). You'll have to order one and see what you get.

Same thing can happen with other parts, like RAM and the display.

So, I went ahead and ordered a maxed out Precision 5510 this morning with 3 year Pro warranty. I configured the system I wanted and saved to my cart then proceeded to engage a sales rep in chat. He gave me what amounts to an additional 10% off ($314). That is satisfactory to me and I didn't want to have to go through any gymnastics to get another few percent though I'm sure it's possible. I was able to get free next business day shipping with a delivery date of 12/2/15.

If for some reason the product is unsatisfactory aside from warranty items the return policy is 21 days and a 15% restocking fee.

I agree, that is what Dell usually does. Now all we need is a statement from Dell about the performance requirements of the various SSD's.
