It's available in US but the configurator has anomalies.

    My 2 cents

@rduke, I had the same thing happen to me (also USA) - I was able to find out from a service rep that my order is on hold (still awaiting a resolution). I'm thinking the issue with my order is that I configured the 81 whr battery with a 2.5" hard disk. I later went into the US, Canada, German, and UK sites to test out the configuration - the US and Canada sites don't give you any errors when you configure like this (in fact, you can ask for 2 2.5" disks and not get a warning, which is certainly invalid). The UK and German sites both flag it as an error - they say that the 84 whr battery (on the page it says 81 whr, but in the error message it says 84 whr like on the XPS15) is not compatible with the 2.5" drive.

But yeah - the puzzling part is that when you go to check your order status on the web site or through the phone system, the "dell purchase id" doesn't seem to exist. Even if the order is on hold or processing hasn't even begun, I'd expect it to find it.

    Thanks for the advice.

I'm curious: Has anyone here "successfully" ordered this machine?

EDIT: I went ahead and successfully ordered mine by obeying the battery/HDD limitation while building it. I got an e-mail that has an order # and the order showed up in my account.

I could be wrong (I hope I'm not lol) but the previous two orders (Customer ID and purchase ID but no Order #) I made don't seem to have a record because they never 'went through'

Can't wait to hear your feedback once you finally get it. I want to pull the trigger too but am holding off until I see some reviews.

AFAIK, the XPS and 5510 are almost the same machine.

But in Canada, the 5510 is twice the cost of a similarly spec'd XPS.

Why would anyone spend $4000 on a Precision when they can get the same components in an XPS?

    Surely the i7-6820 + Quadro M1000M aren't that much better than the i7-6700HQ + 960M.

Yea, targeted at different markets.. but seriously?

Difference isn't nearly that big in the US, on otherwise-comparably equipped machines (and due to configuration, the Precision can be cheaper down here as some expensive options tend to go together on the XPS -- that's why I ended up with the M3800 rather than the last-gen XPS.)

As for who needs it, mainly people who run professional OpenGL software, and/or who require ISV certification for their GPU (the latter is mostly a subset of the former.)

The 960M actually performs better for gaming than the M1000M (by a bigger margin than the 750M over the K1100M -- 25% more CUDA cores rather than just a clock-speed bump) but the professional 3D capabilities of the Geforce chips are intentionally limited, and if you're paying license+support on professional 3D software (potentially more expensive than the machine you're running it on) then you really can't be in the position of calling support and being told "it's your fault, try it again on a certified driver."

Exactly, and since I'll be spending $3k on software a year I want to make sure the machine I use will run it smoothly, hence the quadro GPU.

What configuration did u order? What is your ETA?

Should I order standard battery now and order replacement extended battery later and fast ssd and do DIY install?
