Noise is fine, it's not taking off. Just not used to working so near my machine, as my regular workstation is on the floor next to my desk.
Seemed louder when I just started installing software yesterday, and as mentioned it was loudest when I was not even working on it.
After all installs, windows updates and taking out the optical drive it now seems more then ok sound wise.

If it is the same sound as with my DVD drive in my m6800 than it sounds like the DVD drive tries to search for a DVD even though nothing is in the slot and nothing was put in.

It was exactly that, like every minute.

As for fans "noise" on my previous M4600 as well as on new M6700, fans are going to 2600-2800k RPM with no particular reason = no CPU loads, no GPU loads, no real usage.
Sometimes fans are going on for 2-5 seconds are that's it, other time it's like 20minutes non-stop on 2600-2800k RPM, then it stops.
I have no idea what is causing that and reading thru M6700 thread nobody found a fix for that.

I'm surprised "rssrss" said something similar/same happened on his M6800 when there was no load.

Just installed Bios A03 and the DVD slot searching noise does not seem to happen anymore.
Not sure if it happened before on battery. Will check tomorrow when it is plugged again.

My rep called me, today. Because of some snafu with the order (wrong sku # for packing material?), my order had to be canceled and re-entered. This was AFTER they had already delayed it an additional week.

Now I'm back to square one.

I did use the opportunity to change my SSD to a 750gb hard drive (7200 rpm). I'm ordering (2) ssd's from Crucial, instead. Long story short - Dell lost about $300, and I get better gear. One drive is msata 480gb, the other is sata 960gb. I'll use the 750 as a 3rd backup drive.

Good luck. My original order was 9/19. My new ship date is 10/23 :(

For anyone who has a 6800, do you know is you can choose to make 'any' of the (4) hard drives the boot drive?

I've got one on order. Planning on putting a 480gb msata drive in, along with a 960gb sata drive in the "secondary" bay, which from the manual, is the harder one to get to (not removable).

I'd like to put a 750gb hard drive in the quick eject bay, for backup or storage.

I have also ordered and received an optical bad hard drive caddy. I took a chance and got the one spec'd for an m6700 - do you think that this one will work?:

I'd like to use that for additional options, as they arise. Do you know if these can be easily pulled out?? On my m4400, it had a pop-out latch, like the dvd did. With the slot load drive, I suspect things will be a little different?

    Appreciate the help!

In the bios you can select which devices to boot from and in which order to seek for boot devices.

As the chassis seems to be identical to the m6700 I would expect it to work, but there is no quick removal option. You need to remove the bottom cover and screws to change it.
