On that forum I linked in my previous post, there are some people who can mod BIOS and possibly get Mumak the info he requires. I'd definitely check that out before giving up. I thought that my hp 2570p was completely locked down but not anymore. I can even overclock my CPU ;)

How about you give up and buy a Lenovo instead ;)

Going back to thread, is M6700/M6600 non-IPS display any good? Meaning better than your average TN display in budget laptops?

I have the 1080p TN panel in the M6700 and I'll say that it's better than your average TN panel for sure. Viewing angles are decent (not as good as IPS), color is good, brightness is good, it's sharp, and having the matte/anti-glare finish is very nice.

YMMV, there are a few different panels in use for these models. I have the LG panel. I hear the AUO panel is slightly better and the ideal one to get.

Either the LG or AUO are good panels though, there's a chi mei that isn't as good IIRC.

The Notebook Check review supports the "high quality" on the TN display.

So it looks like the Dell M4800 is the highest resolution model available out of all laptops. Higher resolution than the Macbook Pro, and higher resolution than the Lenovo W540. (I don't think that HP's workstation laptop offers a greater-than 1920x1080 display?)

The overall specs for the Dell M4800 and the Dell M6800 seem surprisingly similar. Both have 4 USB 3.0 ports, HDMI, displayport, etc.

From what I can see, the M6800 has different (more powerful) graphics card options, and has room for one more hard drive within it's chasis. And if you want the 3K screen, the 4800 is your only option.

Is it just me, or is 10-point multi-touch on a 17-inch screen not exactly wow-worthy? Wouldn't most professionals that do 3D modeling (the only real reason to want to touch your laptop's screen) already have a special mouse/input device that would be better?

I mean, I guess if you're on the go and don't have access to your input device it could be handy in a pinch, I just never understood the point of constantly getting fingerprints all over a high quality professional screen.

Are the M4800 and the M6800 both going to feature the exact same processor options?

Anyone know a release date now that they've mostly released all the specs? I don't see either available on Dell.com/Precision. Rumor was September 12th I believe, so maybe tomorrow?

Sept. 12 is confirmed. You'll be able to order them then, so they'll have the configuration page up with full specs. (They probably won't ship for two or three weeks yet.)

Main differences between the two systems...

    - Obviously, M4800 is 15" and M6800 is 17".
    - M6800 has an extra internal 2.5" drive bay.
    - M6800 has a WWAN slot and a mSATA slot, M4800 has one slot that can be used for either purpose so you have to pick one or the other. (Assuming it is the same as the previous two generations in this regard.)
    - M4800 has the high-DPI 3200x1800 display... M6800 gets a touchscreen option.
    - M6800 has a MXM 3.0-b slot for graphics so you can get more powerful cards to put in there.
    - M6800 has a 6-pin IEEE-1394 "Firewire" port, M4800 has a 4-pin (can't provide power to devices).

The rest of the specs are pretty much the same.
