I tried doing a Virtual Machine development setup and it was terrible. After the laptop heated up everything would slow down to a craw and I ended up rebooting often.

I do feel bad paying 3k for my setup, glad I didnt spend 5k.

This will be the last Dell I buy, and this was about my 5th dell laptop.

    Hey Guys,

I really feel for the many of you who are reporting horror stories about problems with your m6500's. So far I've been lucky and have had no problems at all, but I have a strong hunch that trouble is on the horizon.

So maybe we can redirect this conversation on a more productive tack by pooling our collective market knowledge and comparing options for what's next. What laptops now on the market should be considered as alternatives or better choices by m6500 owners who are frustrated and ready to move on to another model or brand? To me, that is a question that we could all benefit from discussing. Unfortunately, all the stories of pain from those who are suffering video card-related problems probably won't do much to help the situation. Maybe helping one another find a better alternative would be a more productive use of our time and energy?

I know that for many of us in this thread, the m6600 is not an option because what drew us to the m6500 in the first place was the display resolution. For me it's about getting the biggest workstation that will fit in my luggage. What I really want is a "laptop" with a 24" 2560x1600 display and five hard drives and USB3. I don't even care if it has a battery, frankly. For me this is about how big a desktop computer I can fit in checked baggage.

What other brands and models should the m6500 deserter consider? Does anyone have a list of all the 1920x1200 laptops on the market? Are there any with even bigger displays?

    In short, who's the competition?

Unfortunately, the only other laptops that have the 16:10, 1920x1200 displays nowadays is a Macbook Pro. Like Dell, HP very annoyingly had 16:10 last gen and moved to 16:9 for this gen even on their most expensive screens and models.

I am also curious if anyone still makes the "larger than 17" display" laptops - my dad has one from a few years ago, but it seems like (unfortunately) they rather died out.

I have a similar problem, though...not quite the same. My needs for a laptop are mostly for moving it from place to place, but I would like a larger screen with the same resolution just because it's easier to read.

For you needs I would wonder if one of the all-in-one computers would work for you, something like this?
    HP - TouchSmart All-In-One Desktop with Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor - 600-1055

That's why it's such a tough situation - there's no real competition to switch to. The res pretty much put it in a class of its own. Can only hope the next one (M6700?) goes back to that. Got the dock, running 2 big external monitors, stuffed full of RAM, running certified apps... pretty much only game in town.

Alienware still has the 18 incher, but the res is 1920 x 1080, and it's a gaming rig, no Quadros.

BOXX almost has a couple Precision-level machines, but they're also 1920 x 1080. No IPS / wide-gamut screen option either as far as I can tell. GoBOXX 2650 looks like a beast.

Okay, problem solved! I phoned Dell tech support, told them that my M6500 was overheating and their technician came the day after. Apparently, he already knows about this problem since my M6500 is nearly two years old (what he mentioned as common for a M6500 of this age) and he had a fan, two heat sinks and a brand new ATI Firepro 7740 graphics card ready for me! He took an hour to change everything and test it and it ran like new! He showed me the dust that was accumulated in the heat sinks and graphics card - no way I could reach it without dismantling a lot of stuff (I just managed to keep the fans clean by vacuuming them every few months). Also, I think he solved my occasional computer hanging problem when it starts by changing the graphics card (can't really confirm yet though). My 3-year extended warranty was definitely worth it! :) I don't think any other company besides Dell does such quick part replacements without giving you a headache trying to prove to them that something is wrong. Asus certainly didn't replace parts for me that willingly. Lenovo only has walk in service and they too don't replace parts with new ones after 2 years. It's like new again! Yay! :)

Oh! Before I forget, the technician told me to get a cooling pad if I don't want to end up having to replace everything again once my warranty period runs out.

Which fingerprint reader is installed on your machine? If it's the Broadcomm FIPS reader, you may be in for some disappointment as far as integration and accessibility with the host operating system is concerned.
