I've got the Intel X25-M 80G8 and it works great for me too. Besides being quiet and fast, it also looks much more sturdy and protected (like a hdd) than the Samsung 60GB SSD that came with my M6500 (which was basically a circuit board with chips on it).

My M6500 is also the silver with the blue USB 3.0 ports although my sales rep kept telling me that they didn't have the USB 2.0 yet and it doesn't mention anywhere in my Dell invoice that my unit has the USB 3.0 ports. The little info sheet that came with my unit does say it is USB 3.0 though.

Could someone please test if the trick found for the fans on other dell laptops work here too? on the m6400 it works, I personally tested it and another guy on the m6400 thread report it as working too

    "Hold Fn+Shift then type 1 5 3 2 4! Now you can enter a menu with Fn + R.
There you can see temperatures from cpu, gpu (skin) and system i think.

And for the ones how wanna set the fan to xxxx rpm they can do this there too. Even the throttling can be disbaled.

You just have to do this every time you start the laptop.
But only, when it was completly without power.
So when you just restart it or put in in "sleeping mode" the settings won't be gone. But thats not a big deal!
You can see if its still on by the blinking led next to the "caps lock" led."

all credit goes to the user who posted it here:
diefer.de - Solution for E-Series (maybe others too)

I hope it wokrs and it can be usefull to someone else.

ps: you can even increase the fan speed above max speed in case, let's say, it's a hot summer day and you have to run a heavy rendiring for some hours.

As I configure possible M6500s on the Dell site, the what-the-heck part of me wants to accept every built-in or daughter-card option. If I don't have to tie up the expresscard slot to use these functions in the future, even if I have no planned uses for them at the present time, I'm in fat city. But, that's the side of me that would rather squander $50 here and $50 there for functions that I might not use right away, than wish that I had added them when I had the chance.

Wi-fi is a given. But, then, why not bluetooth and Gobi wireless (don't have now, but have strong signal at home) and Smartcard reader? I draw the line at the fingerprint reader, though. I don't need it, and it detracts from the appearance, I think.

But, I'm wondering what price I'll pay for my features greed. I imagine these devices help drain the battery and add to heat. Moreover, I'll miss out on future advances in these devices. Unless I can add these things myself, that is.

    So, my questions are:
    1. How significant is the battery-drain and added-heat factor?
    2. Do these communications devices interfere or conflict with one another in any way?
    3. How feasible is it for me to add or replace daughter-card devices, myself? This includes the devices mentioned above, and the minicard SSD.

Thanks for any thoughts and advice.

p.s. I have assembled Heathkit computers and stereos in the past, but that was when transistors were the size of push pins. I have also maintained our home computers over the years, adding and replacing HDs, RAM, etc.

Yes, it also works with the M6500.

@all who are talking about blue USB 3.0 ports:
I wouldn't count on "blue port = USB 3.0". I've seen USB ports in any color in the last 10 years and (to state the obvious) there is is no technical reason to make USB 3.0 ports blue or to not make others blue.
So although this might be a good first hint, there is no reason to assume that it's like that. One day you'll see blue USB 2.0 ports because it'll be stylish or you'll see black or white USB 3.0 port because the manufacturer doesn't care about style.
The only way to tell if a port is USB 3.0 capable without booting an operating system is to look for the additional 5 smaller pins that USB 3.0 has behind the usual 4 pins.

Or check device manager, which I sure most of us did immediately after receiving the unit :)

im thinking about jumping for the 256gb crucial ssd for the m6500 because my asus is blowing the m6500 out of the water in terms of start up and how quickly i can use the apps. I've got hangups with paying $600 for a SSD though. Does an SSD make anyone here productive in less time? or is it more of not having to wait to have the computer boot up and access that first program?
