It wouldn't be any less risky than running platters in RAID 0. Make sure you have a good backup.

FWIW, I tried 2 - Corsair P256 SSD's in RAID 0 in on my M6400. Turned out I got better performance by using them as separate drives (OS and DATA) than in RAID0. I tried many block sizes in RAID0 as well but that didn't make any significant differences.

    Sincerely,
    Tim

altoid...I'm thinking that too as an immediate upgrade to say 1tb at raid0, then a down the road upgrade to SSD's when the prices drop....300 bux for 1tb of hybrid drive? I wish they would UP the SSD
    portion over 4gb's....

but one 128SSD with my 500gig platter will do the trick though....:)

yeah I was thinking the same thing. Boot up times are on par with SSDs from the benchmarks I saw, which is really what I like, plus most used apps get loaded into the SSD portion for quick access.

I'm not sure how the prices will drop in the next 3-4 months, but if I could get a 500GB SSD for about $1-$1.25/GB I would just opt for that instead. Though if I were to go with this hybrid system I'd hang onto it until SSDs were well below $1/gb price so I'm stuck so to speak, plus, 8GB flash would make me happier.

There are reports of battery life dropping compared to a seagate 7200.4 HDD but luckily for us battery life is a non-issue :p

this is the first thing I thought when I saw the seagate drive, its seems to be what people on this forum are already doing(60-80GB SSD+HDD), just on a smaller scale.

Has anyone else experienced this very odd colour bug, which freezes the computer?

    YouTube - Odd colour bug.

It happens periodically, and chuffed out the Dell Technician who was here today as much as it did me -- it disappeared after a while, though, and he deemed the laptop to be working and left. Anyhow, caught it on tape -- happens at bootup, and results in a system lockup.

Very pretty -- not very useful.

Looks to me like a weird screen test, but very weird how it "burns" to the next colour in patches like that..

    Ideas? :]

    Hey guys,

I know I previously said I would "never" buy any Dell products again, but after the last couple of days, I am definitely sticking with Dell!

Last Friday my video card died (sort of) so I called tech support, and after troubleshooting the issue, the tech was convinced I needed a new video card. The problem was I am no longer in the U.S., so I assumed I had to wait until I got back to get it fixed. I expressed my concerns to the tech and somehow she was able to contact Dell Korea. On Monday I got a local call from Dell Korea explaining the ins and outs of the service call. Tuesday afternoon I received the parts in the mail (mobo and video card), 10 minutes later the Dell tech was at the door (I still can’t figure out how he knew the part had arrived), and 15 minutes later the video card was installed, system tested, and the tech was out the door. UNBELIEVABLE, never in a million years would I have expected this level of service from Dell…………..

Here's a pic with the bad video card.

Suffice to say, I am 100% satisfied with their prosupport service. :D

    Hello guys,

sorry to ask about this without searching this thread but 400 pages???,) I'm waiting for my m6500 being delivered any day, I'm in UK, and I'm a little bit worried about memory - it looks like that there are no 1600mhz modules here in europe, except for 2GB Kingstons - is there anyone out there who actually has 4GB 1600mhz in their machine? Or do you know any rumors about this? Mine is comming with 2x2GB 1333mhz and I don't know what to do - if it's better to wait until 4GB 1600 are available and survive on 4GB 1333 until then, or just buy additional 2x2GB 1333 and live with knowing I'll have get to trash then after a while when 1600mhz are available?

    Thanks for any suggestions

    Matej

Think Kingston 1600Mhz sodimms are the only ones out there at the moment, and nothing larger than 2GB modules (can be had in 2x2GB kits).

So yeah, your ceiling's going to be 8GB.

Debated getting a couple of those kits myself to see what the XMP enabled modules would do to performance on a 920XM, but a lot of what I do (development and deployment to VM's)benefits immediately from the extra headroom that the 16GB of 1333Mhz stuff gave me. "YMMV".
