New Latitude 5470

Well if it was stolen I did not steal it, I paid it fairly. So I don't feel like chasing new laptop and then paying it again, especially I never again saw this exact model and configuration on local sites. T460p is also hard to impossible to find. So if I risk it I might never get similar laptop, not to mention cost, which is smaller problem but still a problem. I got used to this laptop and I don't feel like parting with it.

On battery matter here is what I found

Seller says it only lacks packaging. Not sure which of 4 models is this. I asked but no response so far

 

So did you verify this claim in any way? Dell says my model max RAM is 16GB, but I run 32GB. If I remember correctly, models with discrete graphics have LESS room inside (more chips included) so I find it strange that they can fit battery that Intel graphics based models can't. If I am wrong someone correct me please.

 

The E5470 manual (page 48) lists 3 cell 47 Whr and 4 cell 62Whr batteries and shows that the latter is longer. Page 10 of the manual states that the 6 cell battery is not compatible with a hard drive. While the manual isn't consistent with itself, I think the meaning is that the 62Whr battery won't co-exist with a 2.5" drive. However, I can't explain where the 66Whr battery comes from.

Page 45 of the manual states:
• dedicated graphics (Intel 6th generation U-type processors) – 1 DIMM slot
• dedicated and integrated graphics (Intel 6th generation H-type processors) – 2 DIMM slot

I did verify. Model with discrete graphics have 1 DIMM. Battery for them is also less bulky and longer. So more vertical space for GPU and no space for 2.5 inch drive. The IGP model has a compartment for 2.5 drive which seems like it can't be dismounted not sure but looks as part of the chasis. So don't see it can fit long battery

Those are the model number of batteries, I got from Dell. Look on internet how battery looks. To me it seems it can't fit.

To add to confusion, I just chatted with dell support person. Asked about battery, he says they now only have 40Whr 4-cell battery and no other. And 40 Whr battery looks same as that 66Whr except it is shorter. It's part number is GXVJ3

Moreover, one Dell person says GXVJ3 fits on all e5470 models. And other dell person says 66Whr does not fit in IGP graphics (after he did additional research, first he thought it will work)

I think ordering 47Whr 11V Simplo battery from eBay is safest option for me, if someone else wants it, i put the link few posts above. I am ordering. If this goes well and I feel adventurious after upgrading to NVME, I might think about 66whr mod also (i don't think it will go without chasis modification), but that only when 47whr wears out. I go one step at the time for now.

 

This battery arived and it is FAKE. It won't charge it, not real genuine Dell battery.

 

Hi!

I have a E5470 with the i5 quad-core (i5-6440) and to me it seems to be running very hot. When running high performance tasks, it hits 100°C (212°F) and after a couple of minutes the CPU frequency is reduced to 1900MHz. Is anybody having similar behaviour of his laptop? Is this normal or not? My machine is still under warranty so I am considering to contact Dell to have them check it out as well...

It shouldn't reach 100C if the cooling system is working properly. Run HWiNFO, select Sensors and let it interrogate the Dell EC. This will give additional temperature information and also the fan speed. At what temperature does the fan start running at maximum speed and what is this speed? HWiNFO also shows the CPU power consumption. What is the CPU package power when running your high performance tasks? Do these tasks fully load both the CPU and GPU?

If the temperature continues to rise once the fan has reached maximum speed then the problem is most likely to be poor CPU pasting. Dell may be willing to send someone to redo the paste but you can get a better result by doing it yourself with a better quality paste (I use Noctua NT-H1 but other people have different favourites - see the hardware forum). Follow the disassembly instructions in the manual to remove the heat sink, thoroughly clean both the heat sink and the CPU and apply a small amount of paste. The equivalent of a couple of grains of rice is plenty - the objective is to have a very thin layer which fills any gaps between CPU and heatsink, extra thickness reduces the efficiency. Also remove any fluff from the cooling system. Then reassemble and check the effect on the temperature. If not a big difference then repeat with more or less paste - you will see when taking off the heat sink if there's too much or too little.

I just got one e5470 from local cl for $200. I want to use it as a 4k pc to play my movies. I have a docking station k09a which should support displayport 1.2. I hope it will work.

I would add another 8GB RAM so that it's dual channel which will give a boost to the Intel graphics as it uses the system RAM. Also, the extra RAM will help the whole system run a little smoother.

It is not as fast, but a good choice to have a second hard drive.
