New Latitude 5470

Thanks all for the input. I am just going to get a used stick of memory and see where I stand. I don't think that I want to spend the money on 32 GB for a machine like this.

 

Can someone show your last bios time. My e5470 has long bios time (about 16s - 18s). I disable all startup programs

I havent tried to reset windows because i have many installed apps.

My spec is
CPU : 6440HQ
RAM : 16GB
HD : SSD Hynix 256GB and SSD Transcend 512GB on wwan slot

So what is the verdict on random shutdowns?
I have a E5470 running perfectly, but I'd like to add a secondary SSD in the WWAN in the future. Would this cause shutdown issues?

Specs:
Dell Latitude E5470, i5-6440HQ, 16GB DDR4-2133Mhz (With chips on both sides, 16 chips per dimm), Intel HD graphics, 1920x1080 Non touch, 62whr battery, 512GB NVME PCIE SSD (Toshiba XG4)

 

It's possible, but ultimately the only way to know is to put it in to try. Mine was fine with 32gb + 2 SSDs, until I swapped in a bigger main SSD, and after that even going back to the factory configuration (8gb + one HDD) didn't fix the shutdowns.

I pretty much gave up on using mine on battery because of the shutdown issues (it's been running Linux as in essence a low power desktop for about 9 months now) but I'm considering buying one of the 11V 3-cell batteries to see if that fixes it.

Is it difficult and possible to swap out non-touch screen for touchscreen?

Is it an extensive difficult work effort?

I've been wanting to expand my storage for a while now and I bought a 240gb 2242 ssd and it works fine... until the laptop is bumped just slightly. At which point the laptop turns off immediately and then can't be booted again until the ssd is removed and reinserted... To me - this sounds like a installation error maybe it's really difficult to properly place the ssd into the wwan slot? However, it could be just due to the fact that the ssd I bought is some garbage brand that I've never heard of before. Any thoughts from people that have installed an ssd into the wwan slot before?

When it is working (when I'm super careful) I do see it in the bios and everything so that's pretty good I think.

 

Is it securely mounted? Sounds like a loose connection - do you have it mounted with a screw?

 

yes it is securely mounted. This is an imgur album that explains exactly what's happening.

briefly: The ssd, when fully pushed in/secured causes the computer to shut down immediately upon boot. However if I slightly tilt it, it works perfectly fine. Maybe someone else has had a similar situation like this? The metal contacts on both the ssd and the wwan slot look fine to me.

The ssd is still screwed in pretty tight, but if I go any tighter it will adopt an orientation more similar to the way it is when it causes the computer to not boot. I'm not super worried, but I have a feeling this will bite me in the ass in a year or two.

 

I've ordered a new battery for the 5470 to see if that eliminates the shutdown problem (a new motherboard under warranty didn't); there's a 35% off coupon on Dell's public small business site. Ordered the 3-cell 47W/hr rather than another 62W/hr in the hope that it is the higher voltage and a bit more reliable.
