I'm surprised by this: The fan in my E5570 which has the same BIOS (and hence fan rules) doesn't come on until the temperature is well over 60C and then turns off again quite quickly. You can try changing the thermal management options in Dell Power Manager (athough I've never noticed this having an effect). What CPU speed / usage and temperature are you getting? The slowest fan speed according to HWiNFO is about 2200rpm. However, you need at least a single thread running 100% to get the fan to run. Is windows doing housekeeping?

I don't think that will work - the M.2 2280 slot and the 2.5" drive use the same physical space. However, you can put an M.2 2242 SSD in the WWAN slot.

Thanks John. Is the 2242 a bootable drive? That's what I need.

Read the whole thread and you will find this. The Transcend MTS400 is one of the few 2242 SSDs and seems to work OK.

Care to define OK? If it works as well as the Samsung mSATA SSD in my E7440, that would be sufficient. I don't need a ton of performance, but wouldn't want a drop off.

I managed to get the bottom panel off and pulled the hard drive, a 500GB Seagate 7mm 7200RPM, which was a noisy little bugger. One I booted it without it, it was much quieter, though I didn't get far. My 1TB WD is much quieter. Now, if I can get the Transcend to work well, I think I'll have a winner. Thanks John.

Here's what CrystalDiskMark found with the 512GB version (lower capacities may have slower write performance as is common on SSDs).

It's as good as you will get on an SATA SSD. I had it in my E5570 as extra data storage and had no reason to try to configure it as a boot drive). While Transcend is a less well known brand (similar to Liteon) I wouldn't expect the SSD to be full of bugs as they won't be pushing new technologies.

    Hi all,
Hope someone can help me with the following:

I have Windows 7 corporate build on the main M2.SSD drive that my E5470 came with.
I then fitted Transcend 256gb SSD to the WWAN port and all was OK.
I then decided to try and install Windows 10 dual boot on to the Transcend.
The Win 10 install appeared to go OK and runs fine.
But I was not getting a Dual boot menu after reboot - so I did some stuff to enable to the boot menu, but it only listed Windows 10.
So, I then used EasyBCD to add Windows 7 to the boot menu - note that from the drive selection drop down I selected BOOT - as Windows 10 was not assiging a letter to the main SSD and I did not do so either in case it messed things further.
So, now the dual boot shows Windows 10 and the Win7 that I added.
But when I select Windows 7 I get a Windows Failed to Start 0xc000000f error

I then booted off a Windows 7 USB stick to try and do recovery, but when I get to the Select OS to restore list - it is empty...not showing any OS!

Any ideas where I have gone wrong - I need to get this fixed - it is my work laptop!!

Thanks in advance for any input.

Did you make any changes in the BIOS when you installed Windows 10? UEFI and Secureboot might be the cause of your problems (unless these are not enabled on a machine shipped with Windows 7 - I don't know).

    Hi guys,

is it true that 5470 with dGPU has only one memory slot?

I did pick up the MTS400 M.2 SSD on eBay today. Anything I need to know when installing Windows 7 before I do the deed?

Dell's Re-image Guide gives guidance on the installation of drivers / software. The other aspect to consider is UEFI / Secureboot and what settings to have in the BIOS when doing the Win 7 installation (you will have to research this). You might also need to use F6 to load the right SATA driver during the installation.
