Confirmed CPU temperature problem was bad Heatsink, managed to swap the one out of the "broken" m6800 and the temperatures dropped to normal range.

Still can't get the 980m to show up in device manager or GPUz. Just to check to see if the slot was working I tried to swap in the m6100 from the "broken" M6800 and it showed up as 'basic display adapter'. Tried the 780m again, and it now also showed up as 'basic display adapter'. Weird, so I tried the 980m. Still nothing. Retried 780m and installed all drivers. Tried 980m again, nothing.

Also swapped the 980m into the 'broken' M6800 where it also does not show up in device manager.

While it is possible it is just a bad 980m, the fact that the 780m behaved in the same manner until I swapped in the m6100 firepro leads me to believe there is something I am not doing.

So please let me know if there is something that I am forgetting.

Also will not post without switchable graphics enabled (both the 780m before I got it working and the 980m)

It could be the firmware on the 980m. Did you check with the seller of the card which machine it came out of or which OEM manufacturer it originated from?

If it is from an MSI/Clevo/Alienware/Dell then it should be detected as a 'basic display adapter' and you can install the drivers from there.

If it is from a HP then you need to find a firmware from a 980m to flash yours. I can provide you a copy of my firmware from my 980m.

*Edit* firmware extracted using GPUZ and attached.

I found a firepro w7170m on eBay for an unbelievably low price yesterday. The seller has a 30 day return window so I bought it. If it is legit and works with my m6800 I will report back here about it.

Crap! Look at the z-height difference between the two gpu packages! I think I'm going to need an nvidia heatsink...from the pictures I can find online they look more similar to the w7170m.

edit 1: I wanted to test if it was compatible without really stressing it, so I installed it in the machine, lightly secured the heatsink to the mxm card and powered the machine up. Fedora Linux was able to use the "Tonga" GPU in both discrete and hybrid graphics mode! I quickly powered it off after verifying this. Now I just need to get an nvidia heatsink and see if it fits the power components on the card better.

You will need the nvidia heatsink we use for the 980m. It will suit your application without having to mod/cut the copper shim.

    Update on the w7170m...

I used a dremel to mod the NV heatsink to fit the board, and installed the GPU. I got the drivers to install after some minor hassle and then started Overwatch for a quick test. Everything appeared to work great, until I noticed the GPU temperature display in degrees C go from 70...to 75...to 80...and no GPU fan activity. As soon as it hit 85 without any hint of the GPU fan turning on, I quickly powered off the computer.

Even in linux, lm-sensors does not see any fan associated with the GPU, so I think that even though the graphics card mostly works with this machine, there is some power management quirk that is keeping it from being fully compatible. I even noticed that the computer was using 40w in linux while idling on battery, which is also unusual. The GPU seemed to be stuck in a higher power mode (again, maybe because of an ACPI issue).

I'm going to see if a BIOS update might fix this but I won't get my hopes up. I wonder if anybody in the "keep MXM alive" thread would be interested in this GPU?

May 3rd edit: Yeah, I think this GPU is a lost cause with the M6800 unfortunately. BIOS update did not help. Looks like I'll have to go nvidia if I want to upgrade the GPU in the future. (At least I already have the modded heatsink!)

What is the part number for the touchscreen? I was under the impression that there were no eDP touchscreens
