M6800 Owners' Thread

See if you can make a 8950 bios for it. It should enable some extra shaders/etc that the 8950 has that are disabled on the m6100.

 

I was wondering what people's opinions are of the M6800 vs the M6700? Is it worth the upgrade? I hate that the M6800 doesn't have an IPS screen option anymore, and it seems like the M6800 is just a slight speed upgrade with the newer CPU/GPUs.

 

I personaly dont think its worth it unless you have firepro m6000 and are jumping to m6100 or k4100m. Then again you can just upgrade your gpu to get more umph if you need it.

My card is dead l so no thinkering, waiting on the replacement atm.

Altho only game that i play, world of tanks, has had performance increase with catalyst 15.5 drivers.

 

It's just an incremental upgrade — as you mentioned, a CPU/GPU bump and a couple of small things like four USB 3.0 ports instead of two. If you have a M6700, I don't think the upgrade is worth the cost (unless maybe you are going from low-end M6700 to high-end M6800). M6700 is rather upgradeable by itself; you can always add RAM, disks, and maybe even a better CPU or GPU if you are not getting the performance that you need.

What is the consensus? Should I boot from a mSATA SSD or a 2.5 inch SATA SSD? Both appear to be 6G SATA ports, correct? I have a Dell Precision M6800 on order at work. I'm equipping it with a 7200rpm spinning drive from the factory and installing an SSD myself. I plan to install a 500GB Samsung 850 SSD (either PRO or EVO .. but I am leaning towards the mSATA EVO due to price (about $195 from Amazon US) and because it will free up a drive slot for another disk.

Also what power supply should I stick with? The 240W slimline? Should I size up to the 330W (ala Alienware)? Go down to the 180W? I ask because work has spare 180W and spare 210W PSU but no spare 240W PSUs, so I would need to order a second one. And if I'm ordering something, should I just buy the 330W? The weight is not a problem for me. I am using the base level AMD FirePro M6100 GPU, touch screen, and 57W processor, to give everyone an idea of my TDP.

What is the TDP of the FirePro M6100 GPU? Is it 75 watts like notebookcheck.com reports?

Some 2.5" technically have slight better performance compare to masta, but doubt it is make noticeable difference.

Well, 180w and 210w are sufficient but they may not be reorganized properly? if either don't throttle the machine, then they are fine imo.

My understanding is Precision M6600/M6700/M6800 will run at full speed with either a 210W or 240W power supply. It might throttle at 180W. Anything higher than 240W won't give you any benefit.
