M6800 Owners' Thread

Try without the quadro, if it still doesn't work you should reflash the the bios (and before backup it) using a dump on the net with an eeprom programmer like CH341A, it might work

 

Good morning, I am coming from a Dell M4800 with a modded M2000M I did several years ago so modding cards isn't anything very new. I'm working on upgrading to a M6800 and have put a GTX 980M inside it for some more horsepower

So far I can get it to install the drivers from https://premamod.wordpress.com/2017/08/15/j95-nvidia-inf/ to install under the drive signature disabled but however the 980M shows up with and error in windows...

So here I am looking for what i'm doing wrong my device ID is: PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_13D7&SUBSYS_15CD1028

So
1) do I need to edit or modify the install files I see these are a different setup then what i'm used to with Quadro cards??? What or where??

2) Should I update my Vbios with https://www.techpowerup.com/vgabios/182494/182494

3) Something else?

any help would be greatly appreciated so I can get normal life to resume with a laptop again

 

I don't know the proper way to do the INF mod for a GeForce card. However, I can tell you that NVIDIA ("accidentally"?) released drivers that work with the 980M without a mod. This has since been "fixed", but if you go download drivers from the 390.xx through 417.xx range (directly from NVIDIA) then you should be able to just install them which will get you up and running.

You can tell if you have good ones if you can find the text:
NVIDIA_DEV.13D7 = "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 980M"
in nv_disp.inf.

You can see further down just a few posts in this thread where I had someone put their GeForce 965M device ID in the place of the M3000M device ID in the driver... It seemed to work even though the card was identified in Device Manager afterwards as M3000M... You could try that (but using M5000M device ID).

 

To be excat the latest driver including 980M support for my M6700 ist the 419.35 and this should be the same for M6800.

 

So could be trying to do with version 4.36.15 be my entire issue???


so here is where i'm at. I've flashed the vbios and went to the 419.35 in but still no go (error 43)...

 

Hey all,

I recently bought an ex-government M6800 off of eBay.
Specs: i7-4800MQ/K3100M/mSATA SSD/HDD/8GB stock RAM (x2 4GB sticks)/Windows 10/BIOS A08

I've owned it for about two months.
Up until four days ago it had been running fine.

It currently is struggling to POST/boot.

Diagnostics:

• Holding 'D' while powering on will run through the display test, restart, and then hang on POST.
• CMOS has been reseated to no difference.
• RAM has been reseated with varying results, see below.
• Powering on will lead to 3 different varying results:
  1) Power on > disk drive will sound > HDD indicator will flash twice, it will then hang and eventually reboot.
  2) Power on > disk drive will sound > HDD indicator will blink continuously, the other indicator light will remain off > it will eventually reboot.
  3) After reseating the RAM the computer will sometimes boot normally, but again with varying results:
  3a) Laptop will boot info Windows normally.
  3b) Laptop will repeat either options 1 or 2.
  3c) Removing one SODIMM will allow it to boot normally, but it is inconsistent as per which stick it is or in which internal slot underneath the keyboard. It is also inconsistent as per whether it will allow it to boot and will result in options 3a or 3b.
• Windows has been nuked and is a fresh install.
• K3100M is now not visible in the BIOS at all and attempting to install the Nvidia driver will state there isn't a compatible video card found.

Power supply is fine.
Battery is fine, has been removed and replaced numerous times during testing.

I had bought some Corsair Vengeance 16GB 1600Mhz CMSX16GX3M2A1600C10 RAM to make out to 32GB.
The RAM does work in my Lenovo x230T, no problems.
The RAM doesn't work in the M6800 and will give an error code of:
Storage LED / solid
Power LED / blinking
Wireless LED / solid
Fault Description: "The memory modules are detected but has encountered an error."

Device Status Lights Indication

Regarding the status lights, under my Diagnostics 2), they don't exist in the documented indications:
Storage LED / blinking
Power LED / off
Wireless LED / off

I have found another case of this online to no resolve

Does anybody have any ideas on how I can get this laptop working again?
Please let me know if you require any more information.

Help requests:
A) Get it to consistently POST/boot
B) How to have the K3100M show
C) How to ensure the 32GB RAM can work
D) If it can consistently POST I would like to upgrade the BIOS.

If you can run full diagnostics, do so. But this constellation of problems suggests that the motherboard is bad.

 

Agreed. Likely, motherboard replacement is in order.

 

It's worth noting mine wouldn't boot without ddr3L type memory installed .......some , maybe all, M6800's require this ,,,,,,

I suspected that would be the case.
Motherboards are about $250AUD - not really worth it unfortunately.
I'll try a full diagnostics, but otherwise I guess I'll chuck it on eBay for parts to recoup some of the cost. Bugger.

I think it's more the motherboard going than anything, the stock RAM is: SK Hynix 4GB PC3L-12800 1600Mhz DDR3L Memory Module HMT451S6AFR8A-PB (x2)

Given that the symptoms started with this RAM suggests it's more than just the RAM type, unfortunately.
