M6800 Owners' Thread

The K4000m should work fine the P4000 or GTX 1080 won't work unless you are talking about using some external card thingie in which case I don't know. I do know you are pretty much out of luck using an MXM version of those cards to run Windows.... there's a reasonable chance they might work in Linux...... Linux Mint 18.2. There are extensive instructions how to get a GTX 980m working well from Darkydark earlier in this thread ....The p 5000m seems to work about half the time with no problems after reflashing .....Mine is currently (hopefully) being permanently repaired by reballing as it exhibited every sign of cracked solder joints that had been rebaked to get a bit more life out of the card....I presume by the people who sold it to me..... I never had problem with it before the black screens......

 

The Quadro P4000 MXM I got is already working on my M6700, as for the GTX1080 mxm it's more like an experiment, it arrived broken and I tried to fix it but it doesn't work on my M6700, it might work on the M6800. If the 1080 work on linux it would be awesome.
Also there is two revision of the M6800 motherboard ? one with LVDS and the other one with eDP ? it looks like there is also a board with both connector but only one soldered ?

 

Yes, there is an LVDS motherboard and an eDP motherboard. Early on they used LVDS for all available panels, and after a year or so they switched everything over to eDP. There was no IPS display, 3D display, or 4K display option for the M6800 so no reason to have eDP available at launch. (Same for M4800, but it had two versions from the start because they did have a 1800p display.) You can see that they were thinking about it obviously (there is a place on the LVDS motherboard where the eDP port should go).

AFAIK there is no other difference between the two motherboards, one should be a drop-in replacement for the other.

 

Ok, and do you we know if the eDP board is 2 lanes or 4 lanes eDP ?
The board with both connector are LVDS and the latter board with only one connector is only eDP ?

It has a spot for the eDP port, but the port is missing; that is the LVDS-only board. I haven't actually seen one with both LVDS and eDP.
I don't know how many lanes the eDP board is.

The eDP board actually has the eDP port where the LVDS port is in this one, and the "extra" unconnected port is totally missing.
I haven't seen one with both connectors...

 

Yes I mean the one with both traces has only the LVDS port soldered and the board with only one traces and one port is eDP only

 

What I am curious about is how you got the P4000 to work on the M6700 ,,,,,,,, so far as I'm aware no one else has been able to successfully do so. It would be a great thing for our small community if we knew how to make a P4000 work ........

 

I've chatted with him on this, basically he has found a vBIOS that works for booting Windows but has the limitation of not allowing the GPU to hit boost speeds.

 

(this was on my LVDS, since I upgraded to 4k display which should gave a better result than using optimus)
There is a little bit more, all Quadro P4000 mxm cannot boost higher than 1250MHz, which is a low frequency (pascal can easy go up to 1800MHz), that's my only complain with it, I tried some vbios modification (by hand) with no success, it's more powerfull than a 980M even with this low frequency, another great thing is that the Quadro P4000 consume "nothing", like 65W in game and 80W in the most stressfull furmark.
I might also try desktop P4000 vbios but there a very few vbios out there, like 3 on techpowerup...
We also have a Quadro P3000 vbios which is very very similar to the vbios of the P5000 we use on M6700/M6800 but the P3000 is also limited to 1250MHz, so it should perform between a 970M and a 980M.
