M6600 Owners Thread

The issue is with the M6600 BIOS. I have heard a couple of success stories with Kepler but mostly I hear that it will just BSOD at boot no matter what you do.

 

Do they tried other vbios on their kepler card ?

 

Hello. My M6100 just died. I want to buy new one ( used one ). There are 2 versions: K5WCN and MG0X9. Do you know which one is for M6600?

Hey guys! I've got my M6600 upgraded with what I presume is the best CPU for it (i7-2920XM), but I'm looking for the best GPU option.

I saw earlier in this thread that the Radeon R9 M290X was compatible if you modified the heatsink, but some other people saying it's not a simple plug and play sometimes (I'm looking at one ripped from an Alienware 17 R1), and I also heard that the FirePro W7170m (essentially an M390X) might be compatible too, and then I know there's some other Alienware compatible MXM GPUs (crazy example being the RX 480)

I'm essentially hoping to play some somewhat recent games, like Doom 2016, and possibly some Xbox One games, which is why the FirePro M6100 probably won't work for me.

Every iteration that I have seen of the RX 480 uses eDP so that wont work, as for the others you're likely going to have to trial and error it out.

That being said you shouldnt have much issue playing Doom on the m6100 under Vulkan.

 

Ooo, thank you! I wasn't aware the M6100 was that powerful (most benchmarks online say that it would be lucky to play Doom at low settings)

As far as the trial and error method, what's the latest year that might work? I know the W7170m was in the Dell Precision 7710, so should I start with 2015 and look at other cards that came in the Precision laptops? I was going to ask about the WX 7100, but I imagine it's eDP also since it's based on the 480/580.

And does having the IPS display vs the normal TFT screen make a difference in compatible GPUs?

 

I would say the W7170m is likely but just make sure where ever you buy from you can return the card if it ends up not working out.

I was also curious if installing an IPS panel would increase compatibility at all? I noticed in this thread: http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/precision-m6700-gpu-upgrade-k5000m-to-m5000m.807061/ that the M6700 could support Pascal GPUs if you had an IPS panel, does similar hold true for the M6600? Or is the bios old enough that Nvidia Kepler, and AMD Neptune cards are the newest it can possibly use?

 

I don't think so, that was transitioning Era between LVDS and eDP panels some laptops had both, like my ranger for example.

No one has been able to upgrade much of anything in regards to Nvidia on the M6600. For what ever reason the only future for this platform has long been AMD. For those that had looked into the bios for tweaking stated that it was a mess, and that the next Gen was much better to work with.

 

Unfortunately, the M6600 has a BIOS issue that prevents NVIDIA cards newer than Fermi from working, regardless of what type of display is installed.
