I never bothered with PK-3, dunno if its any good. NTH1 is what I typically use.

I read this whole thread to figure what is the best gpu upgrade for the M6600. It's seem not clear which version of Dell Alienware R9 m290x works and I'm interested to know the part number of the compatible one.

I've read too that this gpu is not the most reliable, maybe another one could be better? I know the Firepro M6100 is weekend but works out of the box. It exist the Quadro K5100 8GB too.

Looking to upgrade mine primary for casual 1080p lan party gaming / on the go gaming.

Thanks for keeping this tread up to date ;)

i know its not the thermal paste, PK-3 is VERY good paste. Ive now replaced the heatsink, checked the paste spread and contact which are both good, and changed the fan with very little temp difference.

I can only assume that my specific chip tends to run a bit hot but at the very least im peaking at 95c now and have a heatsink with better screws in it.

k5100 wont work afaik and if you want a painless experience the best option is the m6100 then using a modded overclock bios.

Or if someone takes the plunge on the w7170m

7970m also works but the cost is much more versus the gains versus the m6100

A little update on my 2960xm temp adventure.

Today I decided to run a stress test and while the test was running lift the keyboard so I could put pressure on different areas of the heatsink. Well to my surprise the area I thought was the culprit for temps being bad wasn't exactly.

The m6600 with it's triangular mounting (which is terrible imo) wasn't mounting evenly. Putting pressure on the top point of the mount by the GPU caused temps to skyrocket. I then put pressure on the bottom 2 mounting points and temps improved dramatically.

Long story short, if you run into an issue like me try tinkering with the mounting screws. In my case I needed the bottom 2 screws to be tighter than the top screw to have temps around 80c all core load with peak in Core 2 (hottest one) being 90c

Yeah, with the m6100 going for 50$ the difference is 200$+ for a 7970m isn't worth it IMO

When the m6100 can't hang anymore the 7970m starts to look much better over time.

W7170m would likely be the best, just needs to be tested.

Pull cmos and power drain the machine (pull internal battery too) that should reset the bios.

Probably had Optimus enabled before you pulled the Nvidia card. Which isn't supported on the AMD side
