Are you saying basically any AMD card with LVDS support will work? Not BIOS restricted like the NVIDIA cards?

That seems to be the case on both the m4600 and m6600 laptops.

7970m/m290x have some success in this thread (using google search). I havent seen anyone test it but I surmise the w7170m may be the best option for the m6600. Performs about on par with the 780m and if the BIOS can be unlocked for overclocking you may be able to hit above the 970m.

Do you know for sure one way or another if the W7170m supports LVDS? As I understand, non-IPS screens on the M6600 use LVDS, and IPS screens use eDP.

Hello, I'd like a definitive answer if a Dell/Alienware AMD R9 M290x GPU green pcb works in the Precision M6600 without any additional software fan control or VBios mod or without disabling EC control via Dell Fan Control Utility.
From previous posts isn't clear if the fan spins or are totally dead with stock VBios since all successful installs reports the use of additional software fan control (Speedfan, HWinfo and TThrottle or have disabled EC control at each startup).

@dmgzd had very high GPU temperature exceeding 90°C at load and was forced to use additional fan control software. I suspect a bad contact with heatsink since I had similar issues with my Firepro M6100 before rearrange a precise contact with all surfaces, now it's max 80°C with @valuxin MM2_1188_1650 VBios mod using FurMark GPU stress test after 1 hour. Real games runs cooler.
@Ray Griffith is using an additional cooler under the laptop, but has reported also common temperatures of around 76°C without it but always used a TThrottle utility.

    So the final question:
With stock VBios is the GPU fan dead and an additional software is always necessary or just needed to speed up fans rpms given the higher temperatures?

What BIOS are you on? Tried updating it? Temps sound okay, interesting you have fairly higher on some cores though, but the fans are cycling even when you are in the 50s?

Maybe the fans are dying? If the bearings are failing, then the motor will repeatedly attempt to spin them up.
