I have a question regarding GPU on M6600. My brother has an M6600 with Quadro 2000M thats going bad, artifacts and other issues. I have my old ATI M6100 2gb card from when i upgraded my M6600. the issue is I used the x bracket on my upgrade so i have a bare card. my question is can the Quadro bracket be used on the ATI cards? I have thermal pads and such to make sure its cooled, but want to make sure the bracket is usable, if not i need to get one. Thanks )

I was just thinking earlier this morning.

Has anyone tried the W7170m on the m6600? Might be the best GPU that can work in this laptop.

Hoping someone can help. I have a Precision M6600 with the Quadro 3000M. 2 Weeks ago, the screen would just go black. As far as I can tell, the computer is completely unresponsive. I can't remote desktop into it, and attempting to shut it down blindly via keyboard shortcuts didn't seem to work. I am running Windows 10 and have been running it since it came out. The computer is still on though, just not responsive and it cuts all video (Screen isn't locked up, it's as if there is no display connection)

Now, all of last week, the laptop worked just fine all week long but today has started this again. I ran the diagnostics 2 weeks ago and it passed just fine. I have tried removing and re-installing the GPU drivers (even using Graphics Driver Delete to remove all remnants of it) and reinstalling the newest version, previous versions ,etc.

Now, my battery is on it's last leg, but this is plugged in currently 24/7 and on a UPS so should not be having power delivery issues to the unit itself.

    Any Thoughts?

Remove the GPU and see how it behaves.

I didn't remove the GPU, but I did the following:

Grabbed an extra SSD and installed windows 10 to it fresh. I experienced the same issue, so I did the following:

I tore the laptop apart tried limiting which rams of sticks were installed to see if it was somehow bad ram.
I took the heatsinks off of the CPU and GPU to check the GPU. I should have reseated the GPU, but I didn't. I put the laptop back together and so far so good, but I don't think it's going to last.

So, My next step is to order some thermal paste so I can do what you are suggesting. If that doesn't work, I have a 4600 that has a lower CPU and the AMD Fire Card, I may try and Frankenstein them together (CPU Swap) or I may look and see if I can find a new/used graphics card and replace it.

The oddest thing is that there is nothing in the event logs, nothing to state that anything is wrong. The laptop appears to be working just fine (HD light blinks), but no screens and no input.

I may also try and re-install Win7 to see if this is due to a Win10 issue :)

Thank you for your reply. I will try and update my results. I'm not ready to buy a new laptop yet. Except the lack of 4k, it's still a great laptop.

Just a small update. It worked all last week without any issues. Today again it started again. I don't know if it's a "Monday" thing or what. I wish I could determine what is causing it before i try and buy parts to fix it.

You can still remove the gpu and see if that behavior percists. Up to you. 3000m is old now so it just may be on its way out.

I asked them about this card working on the M6600:

"Sorry but we have not tested any cards on that particular model so we just do not know if any of our cards will work....The card was only added to our website because our EBay person got the impression that this card GTX 965m a working in the Dell notebook because you were buying them for that notebook. We do not have a special vBIOS for this card/Laptop combination. Our techs would load a generic Dell vBIOS."

(I said 970M, but I guess that's what he meant).

So I'm guessing the r9 m290x 4GB is still the top card.

Where did you get the Dell fan utility? I have Speedfan, but not the former.

Also, did you use 8970 drivers, or m290x? (I ask because I don't know why the system would identify an m290x as the 8970, unless they're different names for the same card.)

I may do that. What is odd, is that I noticed that it only happens when I take it off my laptop cooler (I only started using it since this started happening) and it does it docked or not docked. The fans both work just fine, so I"m not sure why it's needed. I do keep it docked, though it has happened without the dock in place as well. The area around the dock connector does get really hot (almost to the point of burning).

I got some thermal paste and I'm waiting on the thermal pads to come in and I will try 1) without GPU (using the intel one)... and 2) trying with the new thermal paste and pads just to be sure.

I also noticed that the GPU VRM is running at 113C, but from my research it seems that is normal (in the fact that the sensor value being picked up by HWInfo is probably wrong).

My guess now is that there is something heating up too much for watever reason and it's causing the machine to lock up. The cooler is doing what it can to keep it cool, though I've monitored the temps that I can see on and off the cooler and they don't seem to very that much. I've even put the machine under heavy load on the cooler and it works just fine... Off the cooler and it can fail within minutes.
